I get my 5 year old niece with the chicken butt joke every time,it's too easy lol. So hi everybody,I'm a new guy,my names Dan,I'm in Rhode Island (so no problem finding Reds right?),in the city actually (Providence). I have a little backyard and a huge love for animals of all kinds and I eat eggs daily,so naturally I started thinking about chickens! This past birthday I got a gift card from 'CLUCK', a local store for "urban farmers" so no more excuses,when life gives you chickens make lemonade... Wait,that's not right. When life gives you lemons,paint them brown and pretend they're chicken eggs? Idk. I would love to hear any breed recommendations y'all might have. I'm also debating building vs buying a coop. Anyway, thanks for having me,and nice to "meet" everyone! Bock-bock (that's my chicken cluck noise,not bad right)

On the coop buy vs build, I'd say build. Pre-made coops are expensive and often inadequate for what you need. There are some wonderful coop designs here, if you want ideas/plans:

Lots of nice breeds out there depending on what you are looking for in chickens. I like the friendly docile ones that are also great layers. The Orpingtons fit into this category...very docile, friendly, great layers and very hardy as well. The Buff Orpingtons and the Black Orpingtons are great with these characteristics. My girls follow me around like drooling puppies looking for goodies or a soft lap to sit on. Excellent layers. Barred Rocks, RIR's, EE's Wyandottes...all docile and great at laying.

As for the coop, if you are handy at building, it is cheaper and better to build your own. However there are lots of nice prebuilt coops out there that do come delivered. The only thing with a prebuilt is that these manufacturers will tell you that say 6 hens can fit into this coop when only 3 will really fit. So be careful with that.

nice intro!! Your choice of chickens will depend on what you want them for. Meat, Eggs or both. I was needing some calm chicken because I have young kids and I got great recommendations here. There are tons to read on all sorts of topics and some funny ppl sprinkled here and there throughout the site. Welcome to BYC!
