I'm like you, I think if I free fed my great dane, he'd pork out big time. I've seen overweight great danes, and it just looks painful to me (on joints, etc.). He just turned 10 months, so I think that's part of why he always seems hungry (like your dog, I think he'd eat anything I put in front of him). I had gone down to feeding him 2X a day a few months back, but switched back to 3X a day feedings. I think that helps a little, spreading the meals out.
But I also agree that most dogs will sneak into the feed (for at least a sample)...and eggs are just good! Who wouldn't try to snatch one??? Especially when they have that warm, freshly laid chickeny smell....

my dogs LOVE chicken food --- even my picky Pug who will not eat anything hardly .... I do from time to time cook a egg or 5 for the dogs as a treat they love em, but I do not know what would happen if they learned eggs were yummy raw .

Over the years I have found some of my dogs are food lovers and I could not free feed while others are just nibblers like cats , as long as your dog is healthy and not overweight I would not change his food intake , if he likes the food . My German Shepherd George had skin issues and had to eat Bil Jac - any other food and he would break out and his hair would fall out his nose would get all blocked up --- the dog food cost 37.00 for 35 pounds which was about a 2 week supply , there were times I ate bean and cornbread so my dog could eat high on the hog. LOL but when your baby needs it you do what you must.

I feel your pain, we have a large black lab (suppose to be pure lab but is the size of a small great dane) and he will eat anything in any amount. He can eat two heaping bowls though he is only suppose to have one (6 cups each) of Iams and I still catch him licking the scratch feed off the ground, trying to gobble up any corn we throw for the chickens before they get it and he will eat the whole feeder of chicken feed as well as all the eggs if he can get into the garage, I threw some old lettuce out the other day for the wild rabbits and found him a few minutes later with the head of lettuce in his mouth trying to hide it because our other dog thought he might have something good. She on the other hand will only eat dog food, and prefers old roy to anything else ( I know, crap food) we mix it with the iams for her so she will eat it and still fight with her to eat a bowl of it. If you find a solution to your dogs apatite let me know. Apollo could easily finish off a bag of dog food in a week if you left it down for him. We caught him knocking the lid off our container we store the dog food in, he ate half of it before we caught him, and the farts this dog has, OMG, he can clear a room!

I started her on Wellness for a long time while she was a baby but it got too expensive and now I feed my dogs Canidae. They do really well on it and we have had no issues at all. I have a 110 pound Shepherd mix that only needs about 4/5 cups a day and maintains his weight beautifully. The Mastiff is roughly 135 pounds. Now that I'm thinking about it it probably WOULDN'T take her a week to polish off a 44 pounds bag... she'd probably do it in 2 days.

I also have an old english mastiff. He eats 4 cups of food a day 2 in the am and 2 in the pm. He is actually a little tubby right now but it is fitting since his name is Pudge. We also have 5 other dogs including 2 wire haired griffons, 2 scotties and a min pin. We go through about 50lbs a week. In agree she may just like the taste and isnt eating in hunger but because she can.

I did catch my Komondor eating eggs the other day. It was my fault though. I had collected the eggs but I had set them down on the gas BBQ, and continued to work around the yard. I saw Puppy sniff the eggs, and I told him to leave them alone. I really didn't think that he would bother them, because he never has before. Well the devil must have tempted him, because just a little while latter all but one egg was gone. He ate them shell and all. I told him to hang his head in shame, and he did.

He wasn't so ashamed though cause I saw him later looking for that last egg.
