One thing you mentioned caught my eye too

Well it's easier to show you than explain but here goes. The bones do spread apart to make room for the eggs. If you hold them upside down and place your hand flat towards the chest and feel for the two pointy bones (I guess it's the front of the pelvis) on my bantams you only get about 1 finger between them not laying and ones that are in laying condition you can get 2-3 fingers between them. Check your rooster first and check the hens you should be able to tell a difference if they are laying. Hope this helps you
