Back in August, we bought 4 yak cow/calf pairs from a farm in Idaho. The yak calves were all about 2 or 3 months old. They mingled with our existing herd just fine. Based on when we stopped observing our yak cows going into heat, we assumed that our first birth would be in June or July. My husband and son were out in the pasture mending fences today, and saw this:
This means that this yak cow came to us with a two month old baby and pregnant. We decided to jump on the quad to go see if we could get close enough to tell the sex of the new little one. Note to self: NEVER DO THAT AGAIN!!!! I did not know that yaks could growl until today. LOL!! It was terrifying. She lowered her legs and head, and started grunting/gurgling/growling and charged into the quad. She hooked her horns under the fender, and I thought she was going to rip it off. We had to jump off on one side to avoid having our legs gored. Luckily, we were able to hop on with one leg and hubby reached over to push the gas. As soon as we got a little ways away from her, we both jumped on the quad and took off. Just in time, too, as the rest of the herd came flying around the corner to come to her rescue. I guess they had heard her distress grunts. Well, we were able to confirm that baby and mom are just fine. We'll just have to wait until we see baby pee to tell what it is. What we do know is that it's a Royal (black and white with a pink nose). This is our first yak baby, and our first Royal. Isn't he/she adorable?
