Guinea eggs

So could you describe it..... Does it sound like their alarm sound or a buckwheat?

Sounded like they were making a bunches of noise! It was different enough that I walked over to the pen to see what was going on. So I am going to say it was outside the normal buckwheat or call. For a single lady to make a noise that would cause me to investigate, it was defiantly an odd noise! I have only heard it 2 or 3 times this yr & I collected over 200 eggs this yr. I would say the sound comes few & far between.

I have also had them lay on a large nest when one is broody & the entire flock had to sound off about it.

Oh good. I have had guineas before but this is the first time I have had females. Last flock was about six males this time I have three females and four males. So it will be my first experience with a breeding flock. So I am asking a buncha stoopid questions.

thanks

Hey I was wondering..... chickens do an Egg Song do Guineas do an egg song or are they stealth layers.

Most of my Hens make a distinct long drawn out, fairly loud cackle/cluck noise... kind of starts out slow and loud then speeds up and tones down before it ends. It usually lasts several seconds, long enough for me to pinpoint where the noise is coming from and then I can go locate the egg (or nest). It's hard to explain, but definitely not one of the typical Guinea sounds, so it will get your attention. But some of my Hens are stealth layers and don't make a peep. I've been out with the Guineas feeding treats and had one Hen walking towards me and just quickly stop, squat and silently lay an egg right there 3 feet from me, and then she just kept on walking, lol.

good description though. Gotto keep them ears tuned... it was 102 down here in San Diego and 95 at my house today.... Summer aint giving up without a fight.

Here is a video of a hen on a nest she makes a short egg song starting at 52 seconds on the video, some of mine sing a long egg song some short but they usually only sing it once as far as i can tell.

Mine make sounds very similar to that, but deeper toned, not so high pitched (could just be the audio on the video making it sound off too me). I don't really notice the 2 syllable clucks coming from my Hens either, but then again I'm never right there when the noisy ones lay, lol. But that's basically what I hear. I call it the "I just laid an egg call".

Sometimes when I hear one of the Hens make the call I'll wander over to go collect the egg (I try to collect eggs as frequently as possibly, especially in the summer temps) and when I get to the nest she hasn't laid one yet... PSYCH! What the heck, just practicing?!?! Hurry up and lay the dang egg will ya!
