Guinea hen with swollen ankle

My 8 month old guinea hen is limping and her ankle is swollen. I think guineas' feet are a lot like chickens' feet. I'll be posting a thread in Chickens injuies as well.

She came down from a tree, at least 5 metres high last night and that was when my mum noticed her limping. She went home though, and fought with the others over roost as usual and today she's trying to keep up with the others. I caught her and had a look and I think she sprained her ankle.

What can I do?

Same thing happened to one of my males. A couple of them were fighting, and the one flew up into a tree to get away. When he came down, he must have landed wrong on it. It was swollen pretty badly and he was limping. He managed to keep out of the way of the other males while he recuperated. If I can recall, it probably took 5 or 6 weeks for it to heal. Good part of it was he became very friendly with me, since he was trying to avoid the other males. Now he loves to see me and runs over for treats as soon as he does. Good luck with yours, I think the only thing you can do is be patient and wait for her to heal.

If nothing is broken and she's still able to get up on the roost, eat, drink and do all the "normal Guinea things", then I wouldn't worry about her too much. Guineas are really good about babying themselves until most minor injuries are healed.

You can confine her to a cage to restrict her movement and give her a better chance to rest and heal a little faster if you want... but that may make her extra anxious and active, and she may pace constantly trying to get out and back with the flock. So in order for that to benefit her you'd need to keep her in a cage that's with/near the flock at all times or the flock may end up rejecting her/seeing her as a new (and unwelcomed) addition to the flock if she's gone for even just a few days.

Could it be bumblefoot though?

I don't know if it should be on a different thread but one of the cocks seems to have cuts on his foot. It's not swollen like bumblefoot but he might have scaly leg mites?

Every day we bathe them both in separate warm epson salts baths.

Sorry to hear that! Try posting in the Diseases and emergencies forum. Is it just the “ankle” or is the leg being held at a weird angle higher up, like there is a problem with the hock or hip joints?
