I have a guinea keet her name is Dottie she is 2 1/2 weeks old. Stupid me had read somewhere not to have Guineas on shavings cause they eat them so used newspaper instead. A little after she was a week old I noticed her legs seemed weak but though they would get stronger as she grew. Until I found some more Guineas near me and got her 2 little buddies. They were only a few days old and they walked better then her. Started researching about it and figured she had a splayed rat leg. I did the bandaid splint on Wednesday the 24th she did well with it no tripping or anything. She was doing great and so I took it off Saturday the 27th. And her leg looked almost perfect. Also once I took off the splint I couldn’t believe it but she started using her wings! I had never seen her use them cause she was always balancing herself I guess. She was doing good a couple days then yesterday the 29th I noticed her right leg turning a little again. She is still eating and drinking, she’s even using her wings a little still. I’m just worried. Yesterday I tried to bandaid splint again and she just kept falling over( it was worse then without it) then I tried the trick with the hair band and straw and she couldn’t walk with it at all. So took everything off and left her until today( didn’t want to stress her too much). Today I tried the bandaid again she stumbled a couple times but then was able to walke to the food and water, it’s keeping her leg a little closer to her body but not right in line. I’m sorry I can post a pic I don’t have much data left on my mobile plan.

I’m just wondering should I leave it splinted for a few days or just take the bandaid off if she keeps stumbling and having a hard time getting around with it. If her leg is out to the side a little and she walks only slightly different is it still a cause for concern or can she live with it if she can get to the food and water? If there’s anything I can do. I put all of my heart into these tiny animals. Once I own them they are my responsibility, I love them and will do anything I can to ensure their safety and survival. I don’t want to stop splinting her leg and give up on her but I worry maybe the splinting is hurting her leg more.

For future reference. This is just my experience with hatching out chicks and keets. I found newspaper to be just as slick as shavings. I take old large low knap towels and line the brooder with them. I have four sets (I have quite a large brooder inside - 5' × 4') so I can replace them twice a week for two weeks and then put down shavings. By that time their little legs are strong enough to stay under them. Would periodontal have a splayed leg incident until doing the towels. Just what works for me. You might want to do it for the little one to help with grip. Make sure you don't have the bandaid positioned so that the legs are too close together. It took me a while to understand the correct spread for putting it on.

Are you sure it is splayed leg and not a slipped tendon (perosis). Perosis requires a different treatment than does splayed leg. If it is a slipped tendon, it needs to have the tendon put back in place and then secured there. Perosis can be caused by a niacin and thiamine deficiency. If you have not been feeding it a proper high protein turkey or gamebird starter, it would not be surprising if it is a niacin and thiamine deficiency. Chick starters do not have the levels of lysine, methionine and niacin that keets need for proper development.

A niacin and thiamine deficiency can be treated by dissolving 1/2 capsule or tablet of vitamin B complex in one gallon of water. Do not mix anything else in the water and make it the only source of water. It should be made fresh daily. It can and should be given to all of your keets.

I’m not 100% sure but looks more like splayed leg. She is on gamebird crumble

I’m wrong I just read a lot about the slipped tendon and I checked Dottie and the back of her hock is flat so it must be slippedtendon. I can’t believe I didn’t notice it sooner

So Tuesday I popped the tendon back in and wrapped with vet wrap she is doing well gonna change the wrap today. I’m gonna buy some vitamin b if it’s a capsule do I give the full one in their water? I’ve read about poly visor without iron should I give her both vitamin b and the polyvisol?

It needs the niacin and thiamine that are in the vitamin B complex. The recommended dose is 1/2 capsule or tablet dissolved in one gallon of water. Do not add anything else to the solution. Make it the only source of water. The vitamin B complex solution can be given to all of them. It should be made fresh daily. I only found vitamin B complex in tablet form but suppose it could come in capsule form.
