I have a guinea keet her name is Dottie she is 2 1/2 weeks old. Stupid me had read somewhere not to have Guineas on shavings cause they eat them so used newspaper instead. A little after she was a week old I noticed her legs seemed weak but though they would get stronger as she grew. Until I found some more Guineas near me and got her 2 little buddies. They were only a few days old and they walked better then her. Started researching about it and figured she had a splayed rat leg. I did the bandaid splint on Wednesday the 24th she did well with it no tripping or anything. She was doing great and so I took it off Saturday the 27th. And her leg looked almost perfect. Also once I took off the splint I couldn’t believe it but she started using her wings! I had never seen her use them cause she was always balancing herself I guess. She was doing good a couple days then yesterday the 29th I noticed her right leg turning a little again. She is still eating and drinking, she’s even using her wings a little still. I’m just worried. Yesterday I tried to bandaid splint again and she just kept falling over( it was worse then without it) then I tried the trick with the hair band and straw and she couldn’t walk with it at all. So took everything off and left her until today( didn’t want to stress her too much). Today I tried the bandaid again she stumbled a couple times but then was able to walke to the food and water, it’s keeping her leg a little closer to her body but not right in line. I’m sorry I can post a pic I don’t have much data left on my mobile plan.
I’m just wondering should I leave it splinted for a few days or just take the bandaid off if she keeps stumbling and having a hard time getting around with it. If her leg is out to the side a little and she walks only slightly different is it still a cause for concern or can she live with it if she can get to the food and water? If there’s anything I can do. I put all of my heart into these tiny animals. Once I own them they are my responsibility, I love them and will do anything I can to ensure their safety and survival. I don’t want to stop splinting her leg and give up on her but I worry maybe the splinting is hurting her leg more.
