Guineas vs. neighbors...what would you do?

The guy that came to "talk" to me is one who has 2 of the weenie dogs and he and the neighbor with the 2 big dogs get into it becouse he does not think "big" dogs should be aloud to roam, only little dogs

Thanks for al the advise, I just wanted to see what everyone else would do get rid of them or keep them, I do not want want to come across as a (insert word here) Im just so frustrated. I would hate to SSS anyones dogs but im really geting to the point I just might. My chickens and guineas stay in my yard and dont roam all over but I can only let them out if Im right there. oh and Im the one with property outside city limits but I keep my dogs penned. It so frustrating, Ill be so glad next year when we build our house on our land in the country, I love the neighbors out there. Seems every time we were out burning or clearing or puting up fence someone always stoped to say hi and introduce themselfs. Some even offered to help. Ill be sure glad to get out of this tiny snotty town.

I'll share a story of how we handled one of our neighbors whose dog was habitually left to run. One day when I'd had enough I put their dog in an empty run - we use a lot of 10'x10'x6'dog kennel runs as breeding pens. We expected to return the dog to the owners when they came looking for him. After 10 days Himself called the neighbor to come get the dog as it was obvious that they were not looking very hard for it. Our neighbor is a *smirker* also and informed Himself that HIS dog was in the basement. Himself said fine then I'm shooting the dog we've had in the kennel out back for the last 10 days and hung up the phone. With in 5 minutes the teenage son was down to collect the dog and we haven't had nearly as many visits since.

We don't have city police either, just the Sheriff's office, but I didn't think about the fact that YOUR house is in the county, which means their dog is roaming in the county. That's tough. All I can say is make sure your fence is tight, check and see if you can borrow a trap big enough for a dog (you have rights on your own property, right? If you've talked to them about their dog in your yard, and it keeps happening, even the visual might make a difference.) and live your life the way you want. A little daytime noise isn't half as annoying as their dog killing your birds.

And I'll understand if you don't put up a trap. After my neighbor (in another neighborhood) didn't keep track of their dog when threatened by a $500 fine, we gave up. It meant we couldn't take our dog for a walk --even on a leash--because theirs would attack her if one of their kids let it out for a run while we were out, but it wasn't worth the headache, and they had otherwise been really great neighbors. Within a few months their dog disappeared. Animal Control or a move to a family farm, I don't know. I was just glad it was gone.

But if you did catch his dog, could you take it to the pound yourself? Just a thought. Good luck, and I hope your new house gets built quickly!

All my neighbours get one warning.... my animals safety in my property comes first.... their animals are welcome to wander here at their own risk.

Tell him youll get rid of your birds when his dogs stop coming on your property.

Even if animal control has no jurisdiction there there's nothing stopping you from loading up the dogs and hauling them to animal control. I'm more in favor of sss, to be honest, but unless you can be sure of him not finding out those are feathers you don't necessarily want ruffled since you have to be neighbors.

Just tell him you got the guineas to warn against his dogs, so as soon as he gets rid of the dogs you'll think about getting rid of the birds. Then smirk and walk off.

Ya know. Guinea fowl come in white, pearl, purple, lavender and a few other colors. Also, there are "french" Guineas that a pretty darn big and very noisy and aggressive.

I would get a few of each and watch the show. Maybe you can finally get back at the idiots that let their dogs run loose and unbridled.

I have 2 french, 4 lavender, 4 white, 4 pearl, 4 purple and a hen setting 20 eggs. I LOVE my guinea fowl and would not have it any other way.

For those habitual dogs on the loose: I have a 6 mm with a scope. The animals here take the carcass within one night so I do not even have to use my shovel.

I personally don't have a problem shooting dogs at large. Those animals are very dangerous when allowed to roam in packs. Not just to your animals but also with children. I also believe that it goes both ways. If my dog got loose and ran onto someone else's property and was threatening the livestock and such- I would understand that that person had the right to shoot.

I shoot any stray dog I see on my land. However, I don't shoot to kill the first time. I use a 410 shot gun and aim for the rump. All that is is a bunch of BB's hitting at once. It stings and makes them run for the hills. Usually all it takes is once. They don't come back and no one is dead. But like I said, if it comes back, I don't have a problem shooting it.

This goes to the idea that you are responsible for your actions. You let your dogs run lose, they will get hurt. The rest of the neighbors are not responsible to take care of and put up with your dogs. I don't have any problem holding someone responsible for their actions.

By all means: KEEP THE GUINEAS!

I agree with the other people on the thread. I have had dogs in my birds. First, you talk to the owners, if you know who they are, and ask them to keep their dogs confined. I don't know about where you live, but most areas DO have a leash law.

If they don't, you then call animal control, who will help you trap them. At least here they do. And then they go to the shelter.

And if that does not stop the problem, you have your Guineas to help you be alert to dogs, and you shoot the marauding dogs. I use a small 22 calibre revolver because I can deal with the recoil, and I have small shotgun shells because they have a wider spread.

I guess you need to check the laws, the state police will know, but here, it is indeed legal to shoot a dog who is bothering livestock.

I love dogs, I have five of my own, but I keep them in our yard. We all have not only a right to protect our birds, but also a responsibility, because chickens are really pretty helpless against predators.

And yes, get a Peacock to go with the Guineas! You will have to protect it against the Guineas until it is full grown, but then it will do very well for itself! Get two, a male and a female! You will LOVE them.
