Guineas

I like them. They are messy and a pain. Once they can be released from the baby pen, I don't worry about them. They kill bugs and little snakes etc and do as they please. I only had to kill one several years ago for being too aggressive with my chickens. After the baby stage, I enjoy their antics and services as alarms and tick eaters.

I would think so, from what I've read about them they'll eat anything that moves. Our dog killed all but 1 of our guineas so I have to completely start over.

once i purchased 10 young adult guineas for tick control. because they weren't raised on my place, i was afraid they would fly away and not come back, as there was no attachment. so i decided to pen them all up for a couple of weeks, then let 2 out, thinking they would stick around because they were a fairly close knit group. after the two stayed near the coup, and roosted on top of it for a week, i let two more out. the four did the same thing the two did for a week, that is, stick close by the coup and roost on top of it at night. every week i let two more out of the coupe. when there were eight out and only two in, and all eight were roosting on top of the coup, i figured they had acclimated to the place, and let the last two out. they stayed for one more day, then took off, and i never saw them again. so much for tick control. but i leaned my lesson, and from there on out purchased day old guineas. they have always stuck around, and several hatched out keets on their own. they're worth the mess they make when they're in the brooder, provided you don't mind a screech that is entirely disproportionate to the size of the bird, and provided you either have a lot of land or very tolerant neighbors. oh, and one of their favorite pastimes, when they're not eating ticks, is to chase the much larger roosters around the place and pull the roosters tail feathers.

I had guineas once before. One guinea actually showed up at our house right after a tornado half a state away! We sometimes think that she came from the tornado.. We got some more to be her friend and she loved them! Then our dogs got the ones that we had gotten for her, but they didn't get the survivor! She moved to our neighbors after that.. We were considering getting a couple more.. They were just soo funny:) ours were loose, that's the only way they would have it!

Laci7210...Sounds like you were ment to have guineas! I think we talked on the phone. If so I will have some for you very soon.
afarhat8 ...It is very hard to re-train adult guines to new surroundings, It can be done (sometimes) but very difficult. When I first got guineas several years ago I did the same thing. They all went back to the lady up the road whom I paid to get them, lol, I brought them back home and left them in for 6 weeks!!I if you had coaxed the ones that were out all day back in at night I think they all would have stayed. I kept mine in forever the next time and let them all out at once. Did not feed them at all and bribed/ tricked them back in every nnight. You have to train them to come when you call, that is why it is better to get keets to start. Just easier IMO.
