I have wanted guineas for a while now. My fiance says no because he thinks they are mean. I have finally begged enough that he says if I can get more positive input than negative on here that I can get them. So can someone give me the postives & negatives of owning guineas? Thanks

Positives :
Eat bugs (ticks with lime disease!!! Mosquitos!!)
Chase away snakes (they tend to 'colonize' around it pissing it off with their noise before they'll actually kill it, LOL)
Very pretty
Alarms (they tend to kinda 'tick' and then get louder if the danger comes near, it's very funny)
Eggs!

Negatives :
LOUD (though if you have peacocks like I believe you do, then I don't think noise is an issue...)
Stupid, stupid birds (will starve themselves to death if dirty)
High mortality rate
Awful moms
Out of laying season, useless
If one jumps into the coyotes den, the rest will too. Very follow the leader.

I personally love guineas! They're cons really don't outweighs the pros, simply cause I love em! XD

Ooh. I never thought to bring the tick part up to him. Our dog is dying (or so the vets say)from Lymes disease so that's a good selling point. I have declared war on those bloodsucking little jerks The noise won't be an issue, he's already said they aren't living at the house. He's making me keep them at the farm, if i get them Yep. We have 3 peacocks, although I swear my ducks are louder than the peacocks. Lol.
His only interaction with guineas is when he delivers feed to a farm and they chase him and try to attack him. but in their defense, my dog would attack any stranger that came on our property, so I just don't see a difference. They are protecting their property. I think they are cool looking and I like variety in my lil flock :).

Sorry for the lack of punctuation, my iPad isn't Cooperating tonight. Lol. I've gone back and tried to fix it 3x

Oh they are when they want to be lol!

Haha , no the guineas at this farm attacked him. I find it hilarious too lol. He comes home grunting and growling about it. He works at a feed mill n delivers feed to peoples farms. Runs into all kinds of animals i guess.
My peacocks don't really seem to care if you are there or not. They just kinda look at you. I think they are the least interactive out of all the birds.

I think he's afraid of them seriously though, we had an escape artist pheasant. It always got out of its pen and couldn't get back in. And everyday it would be trying to get back in the pen. I usually caught him n put him back in. One day he went to get the pheasant and put it back in, I heard this high pitched squeal and he came running out and said he hated the pheasant because it flew in his face and i had to go catch it. So I think it's definitely a fear :). Men can be such babies lol.

That was exactly my plan, I didn't expect to find any guinea haters here.

Ah, I see.
They are babies! I had a chicken (Broody) fly in my face. I refused to take eggs from her, but I wasn't scared of her. I just was scared of taking eggs from her.. (Granite I was 9-10)
Oh I just see it night... 50, ravenous, rabid guineas attack the man.... Squawking from all directions as the fluffy freaks try to scare away the intruder.. Before you know it, the boldest hurls himself at the mans face... They began to throw themselves at him as he runs into the woods... Legend says they never found the body, but the guineas now have a distant, bloody stare

Lol, don't show him the exact posts then, don't want his little brain to catch on  ;) :D

I remember reading somewhere where an UPS man refused to deliver a package to
someones home...the home was called to pickup their delivery..his reason was that
when he attempted to deliver earlier that "a pack of clown looking turkeys ran him off"!!!

my guineas are also hours of entertainment
they are better with earlier detection of someone stopping by
yes, great on the ticks and bugs, snakes, coyotes, stray dogs, etc
recently killed a snake in the hen house
assorted colors
eggs for eating or incubating
can raise and sell making a few $$

I have chickens, ducks, peafowl, dogs and guineas...love them all
oh, and a cat (my guineas have killed mice and voles too, just as good as the cat)

2 free range flocks and 1 penned flock....love them!

maybe he could have a small bag or handful of feed with him for those guineas where he delivers and throw some out for them....making "friends" or not a threat to them??

omg! lol now i can never ever show him the post hahaha

I love mine. I have roosters and so noise doesn't bother me. I keep them primarily for ticks and snakes. None here since they have been on duty!!

haha wow.. that ups man must have been a baby.. my ups man left notes up to my porch one day. there was a rattlesnake trying to bite him on my porch & he knew we had dogs and small kids running around here. My whole porch was covered in ups notes that said SNAKE! with arrows lol.. he caught it and put it in a box on my porch, said he didnt have anything to kill it and didnt want anyone to get bit. Thank goodness we dont have that UPS man lol.

Ill have to let him know about the feed idea :) I think hes gonna have no choice but to let me get them :) I see waaaay more positives than negatives :)
