Guinea's

Someone told me that Guinea hens are protectors of your flock that they will chase off predators, is this true?

Some flocks will gang up and chase off predators, screeching and chattering at them until they drive them away, and some birds will even charge at/attack sometimes, but not all are that bold. Mostly Guineas are used as an early warning alarm system... because they will sound off about anything out of the norm that they perceive as possible danger. The rest of your flock learns that when the Guineas go off they should be on alert or run for safety/hide.

PeepsCa is right on with her answer. We've had our guineas chase off coyote and fox. With the coyote, they actually circled it and started screeching. The coyote was totally confused and ran off, never to be seen again (thank goodness!). We also have a lot of deer here (but they're not a problem with anything)...... they tried chasing them out of the yard, too.....but the deer just stood and looked at them, eventually running away when they were tired of listening to them! lol And yes......our ducks and chickens always become very alert as soon as the guineas start yacking. Horray for Guineas!!! They rule the barnyard!
