Good. I hope you are right.

I for one, however, will never relax in the security that any of our rights are safe- just like our founding fathers. I will instead be vigilant in preserving them. Just like our founding fathers.

THAT is true security.

Does anyone know if that right to keep and bear gums was, like, chewing gum, or our teeth and gums...

I can see how it would increase the public safety if chewing gum was only given to those who had passed a test and were registered- have you ever tried to get gum off the bottom of shoes???

Thanks for all this info! I got my concealed carry permit last fall and have been sort of shopping for a handgun. Haven't had much luck so far. The dealers seem to think because I'm a woman, they can rip me off and I'm too dumb to know! So, I'm still searching for someone honest enough to deal with!!! Sad but true.

If you have a friend on the police force see if they can help you find what you are looking for. Their are usaully a couple officers who have a FFL and can get you what you are looking for reasonable. Whatever the most popular firearm at the time is going to be the most expensive.

For personal carry I tend to shy away from the most attractive and focus on function. I do not carry concealed most times so size is no factor, most times my handgun is in open view of the public.

Colt 45 auto is very pricey and most of the clones, BUT the older beat up military Spanish models function very well and are affordable. I own a Star 9X23 that operates flawlessly the only problem I have to reload and buy casings for it. A good gunsmith can reline the chamber to 9MM though without a problem. Revolvers are very easy to obtain and reasonable, most times I carry a revolver. There are other options but all of them like the star 9X23 involve minor gunsmithing. I own a Russian 9X18 that is the same size as a Walther PPK but a little more potent. I paid less than $100 for the pistol. The only thing that needed to be done was polishing of the ridges on the trigger for a smoother more comfortable pull. Surplus ammo for this caliber is cheap STILL. I also carry a 1911 but I built it from scratch so it was very reasonable.

So there are options until you find that dream gun, and I bet there is a officer who has the dream gun but doesn't care for it after he got it. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I suppose some day a new form of personal weapon will be developed that will make the firearm obsolete just as other weapons have become obsolete ( I don't see many people wanting to haul around a stone tipped spear now days). In that case, they won't need (or probably even want) guns.

Till then, I reckon you got nothing to fear.

I don't know where you're located but when I got my carry permit and gun I went to an indoor range and could try out several different guns. I'd thought I'd get a revolver until I shot one and didn't like it at all. I ended up with a Kahr 9 mm and a Springfield XD 9 mm. If at all possible I'd try to go somewhere where you can try out some first. Also where I went, the carry permit class and sales person was a woman! They have permit classes there three times a month and one of them is a "Ladies Only" class!

I wasn't talking about the advancement of arms technology. I was talking about government. You don't know what sort of lunatic, socialist, fascist, nazi, whatever type government might get voted in. It might not happen today, but what about 20, 50 or 100 years from now? We have to preserve our rights and the rights of our descendents to bear arms. Whether those arms are spears, pistols or ray guns. The founding fathers put the 2nd amendment in the Constitution to protect future generations. It allows people the opportunity to stand up against oppression. It's selfish to think that we don't need to defend that right for future generations just because we feel secure now. Past generations defended our rights. Our granchildren deserve the same.

PERSONAL OPINION ONLY: I would avoid a revolver, I like the glock and springfield type weapons. Revolvers, if they are fully laoded, alwasy have abullet in the chamber. The other handguns do not. And they also are equiped with trigger safeties, grip safeties, and other features that make them safer, IMO.

I would reccomend a Glock or Springfield XD, those are our favorites. My personal favorite is a Walther p22, but it is a .22 caliber, not probably what you want for self defense. Walther does have larger caliber guns in the same style. They are nice guns, but I have never shot one myself.

This is true too. But I have never had our glocks or Springfields jam, and we have put a lot of rounds through several of them. But if you get any of the lower quality ones they can and do jam a lot.

I just have issues with revolvers and children. They just scare me a little bit, but if they arent loaded that would be different. But for a self defense gun I am assuming it will be loaded.

However, if she has no children, it is probably not a big deal.

Our kids are trained very well never to touch a gun, and they have seen what a gun does. (rabbits, etc.)

But I still dont want to take chances with a revolver. Personally. DH likes them too. They are simpler to learn too, I think. But I am sure she's got that part down since she already has her permit.

"In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man and brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot." --Mark Twain

Arms are the only true badges of liberty. The possession of arms is the distinction of a free man from a slave. -- Andrew Fletcher (1698)

"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretence, raised in the United States." --Noah Webster of Pennsylvania, An Examination of the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution, Philadelphia, 1787

Americans need not fear the federal government because they enjoy the advantage of being armed, which you posses over the people of almost every other nation. -- James Madison.

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin, 1759"

And with these famous quotes (and I have many) my friends, I will leave this thread to those who seek the answers to troubled questions of thier own souls. For me, they were answered when I was born. Good Luck, and be safe, whatever you decide.
