Gun owners and shooters, may I ask your opinions, please

PERFECT answer. Asking which gun is best for you is like asking public opinion on which underwear to buy. How can we know which one fits, feels best, and accomplishes YOUR intended purpose. Very personal chioce. I suggest some time shooting at a range with friends or rented firearms. The more you shoot, the clearer it will become. Come on over, you can shoot mine all you like!!!

If you live in NYC - yes you need a permit for rifles and shotguns. If not in NYC, you can go and buy. I believe you will have a quickie background check performed (we do in MI and MI gun laws aren't as strict as NY) - it takes all of 5 or 10 minutes.

Here's a nice sheet from the NRA- http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/NYSL.pdf

Its the same here - you have to have a permit and background check to buy a handgun - and you can't get a permit unless your 21 here in Person County - North Carolina don't know if its the whole state - but I bet it is. Rifles and shotguns - you don't need a permit - but buying one new from a store or dealer you have to have a preliminary background check.

Are you specifically looking for a handgun? Again - I would say if you want self confidence for you - get a handgun for yourself and for predators/pests get a decent rifle for both you and your hubby.

If you are not intending to use the firearm for self defense you really do not need a pistol at all. It is a poor choice for predators, more expensive than a long gun. Now it is your right to own or not own one, just that shotguns and rifles are much better for predator control. No matter what you are going to use it for responsibility is a must. Handguns offer convenience because they are easier to carry, but anything a handgun can do a rifle can do better.

I'm going to throw this out there too - many stores have used guns on consignment, especially rifles and shotguns. I personally like used guns that have a good name, and come from stores that have test fired and inspected them (the Gander Mountain we go to has a fantastic gun shop). I've purchase most of my guns used for a lot less than they cost new.

I believe (check your state laws), you can also purchase shotguns and rifles from other people with no or minimal hoopla (handguns usually have to be registered and the sale completed with the police/court). I have personally purchased shotguns from friends - including my beloved beat up 20ga that I absolutely adore shooting (we shoot clays, friend offered it to let me try it, I shot, loved it, he said it was for sale, I said how much, he stated a price, and I went to the ATM and bought it

My DH has gotten so much from this thread, he has written down A LOT and he is heading to Gander Mountain this morning!!!!!!!

Thank you SO much!!!!!!!!!!

well i saw 7 pages and cant be bothered to read all of them
BUT IMO goto a reputable gun dealer or call and ask if they have a firing range or can recommend one where you can fire a few different side arms yes you will likely pay more than a pawn broker or gang banger on the street corner but do i really gotta go into the reasons. well the dealer will know about what he is selling more than just the profit margin. and most likely has used weapons and most likely a gun smith also. so he knows what is reliable. i know a couple shops that have ranges here. if it feels ok but you cant control it when fired its useless to you
join the NRA
i would open carry at least on your own land
and have a gun safe and/or trigger lock or cable when its not carried at least if you have kids or there is a change of being burgled , we dont need any more accidents to fuel the hysteria
now i'll read the rest of the comments
