Gun suggestions for predators-really

Indeed they do. I always find it refreshing to see how much interest there is in these gun discussions. You'd almost think, just for a minute, that there are no political forces working to take firearms ownership away from us....

I love a 22. Doesn't kick and isn't very loud. My DH has a high powered pellet gun that does the trick very nicely.

I'm pretty short and have short arms but I found that my H&R 20q youth model slug works great during deer hunting (large game), and I was able to get a Winchester 1300 compact model 12g that has a short stock and came with several chokes. You could use a full choke to tighten your shot pattern.

I shopped online with the manufacturer's websites until I found what i wanted, printed it out and took it to the local sporting goods shop and told them ~ this is what I want order it for me. that way I had the pricing and specs straight from the source.

Hopefully you won't need it.

Wow, what gun to use... This is a debate that could take years, and I'm glad someone asked because I'm learning something new! Guess I get to set in my ways

When checking the traps, I've got my .22lr across my back. When coyote hunting we're only supposed to use a .22 or a shotgun, but I agree a .30 caliber or larger is the ticket...

Pistols? I'm in the same boat as the OP, I have small hands. I have all sorts of handguns, with a .45 being the largest, but my all around favorite is a .38 revolver. Small, lightweight, enough powder and lead to do the job, and it doesn't kill me when I go out with two or three boxes of shells for practice like my .45 does.

PS, I mainly stick to common rounds and calibers and never go with the exotics, because when doomsday comes, how are you going to find more ammo for your 44/470?

kidding.....

I agree a .22 for the smaller animals, but I love my .243 for accuracy. All the old timers in my area said .243 over and over again for accuracy. After I got it sighted in all the shots I took at animals landed dead on! None lingered and suffered. Yup, I'll be with my .243 with a scope forever! Love them old timers!

foe accuracy.... and a reach out and touch ya round... I have to vote for my Browning A-bolt w/BOSS in .270WSM.... 3 in a dime at 100 all day long and barley drops way out... the .243 WAS my go to for flat and accurate befor this gun..I LOVE IT!

The .243 is very accurate! Seems all the rounds based on the .308 are, the .243 and 7mm-08.

A few years ago we got Sharon a Kimber in .243, right out of the box with marked down PMC ammo it shot 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards. It only took a few times at the reloading bench to cut that in half. I like a .308 myself and have a soft spot for the "ole M-14" that I trained with in the military. My next rifle will be a Kimber in 7mm-08.

Alot of good replies and some good info.

My turn, lol

One gun to do it all, tuff. Have to go with a 12gauge shotgun. The different types of ammo. Also the reduced recoil ammo is nice.

Major draw back : coon in coop you might take out other chickens.

For predator hunting I use a Savage 24, .222/20 gauge. Alittle heavy but have best of both worlds.

home defense: 12/20 gauge coach gun. Short, sweet and simple.

As for handgun: Say a .357 mag. you can load it with .38 and snake shot and keep one or two .357's just in case something bigger show up.

good luck
