Guppies ??

I used to keep a tank of goldfish for feeding two big mean fish I used to have......watch out for pet store fish, they use alot of anti-stress medication and de-ick stuff....

I used to keep my goldfish in thier own tank for a month or so,(on nothing but well water) till they either got bigger or died, about 20% would die within a month, usually of ick. Not sure what the diseases or medications they use would do to a chicken, but they made my predator fish sick several times till I figured it out...

They're all ramshorn and common pond snails. Think we'll just stick to feeding them to the koi. Makes them more useful, they clean the tank before becoming food lol

All are healthy and have never been medicated. None of our fish are from pet stores. We got a couple of guppies from friends a few years ago, and they've been breeding nonstop ever since. We've given piles away to friends and have one who keeps a tank of just males so she will take pretty much any we have to give, but we still end up with way to many for our tank size. When I saw the posts about feeding them to chickens I thought great solve the tank problem and offer a protein treat to the chickens occasionally. Just wanted to make sure it was safe to do so, I'd rather flush them than make my chickens sick

And they can't run away either!!. Seriously, I think the protein would be great for them. If they are multiplying, they are healthy. Anything sick doesn't multiply.

I don't know too much about fish other than what I've seen at pet stores. Can you recommend a place to buy them where they would be okay to give to the chickens?

I have several fish tanks and have kept and bred several species over the years. From a fish-keeping perspective, it's usually recommended to breed them yourself. However, I have NO vet experience so couldn't advise if it would harm your hens to feed them fish bought directly from a pet store. I do water changes weekly and when a fish makes it through the hose to the backyard, the girls are tickled to "clean it up" for me. I hope this helps somewhat.
