Gurgling hen - please help!

Thanks Francis!

She's currently being treated with Flubenvet for worms. Treatment started on Saturday so still have a few days to go. Will look into Ivermectin though.

Gurgling sounds is from liquid in the lungs. There are inflictions that originate in the lungs and diseases that turn septic which in turn causes fluid to build in the lungs. Recommended reading "the Chicken Health Handbook" by Gail Damerow costs around $20. Is a storey published book. Your vet should have tested for disease and given the correct treatment. My #1 rooster had a crackle in his breathing for about a month and I was hoping it would cure on it's own. I gave him 1 cc of Pen Bp-48 and did not help in 2 days, next I gave it 1/2 cc of Tylan 50. 2 days later he was #1 again. Besides parasites, this is my standard treatment for all curable diseases inflicting their breathing. Note a necropsy (postmortem examination) on any dead chicken may help the diagnosis for other chickens.

Moody - she wasn't physically injured in the attack - the two others were killed though. The others were battery hens just weeks out of the cages while she was a much more "street-wise" hen and got herself up on a windowsill. She seemed to recover her confidence in a day.

I'm using the liquid Baytril - i'm not sure what the concentration is - would it say on the label? It just says "baytril 10 oral sol. Add 1mil to 1L water daily"

I've never heard of adding Baytril to water. I give it orally as a paste, but deluted as it is caustic if given straight (it will burn the throat). Could you get a pic of the label? I will get you the delution ratio when I get home... I *think* it's 8 full cc of corn syrup to 1 full cc of Baytril. This is how our vet (avian specialist) told me to do it and it's never failed since. It will only last about one month after it's mixed, so mix only what you need.

Could it be different as I am in the UK?

The label is just a print out of basic info i.e. my address and animals details then the vets name and address and name of the drug and how to administer it (as quoted earlier)...

Also - my current vet isn't an avian specialist. There is one local to me though so I may just go straight to them tomorrow instead?

That might be the problem! lol. I would think the drug is the same though.

I'll look it up.

The problem with the water method is that she has to willingly drink it. Given as a paste you are FORCING her to take it and thus guarantee that she is getting the correct amount needed daily for recovery.

Most vets aren't very keen on avian health, so they treat them like a cat or a dog and that doesn't always work with birds. You'd be better off with the avian specialist.

Ok, the "10" refers to the concentration. And that's what I have. You could give it as a paste if you want. You want to dilute it to 5% for a chicken. So, like I mentioned earlier, I'm not 100% sure but I think you add 8 full cc of corn sryup to 1 full cc of Baytril and give her .4 cc per 22 ounces of body weight. I give .4 cc to a Modern Game bantam hen and .6 cc for a Cornish bantam if that helps you guesstimate how much to give her.

Thank you so much for your help!!

I've checked the baytril website and it says the solution is 10%.

Oops - crossed posts!

Is she sneezing? Two of my hens got a cold just before spring and this can turn into a sinus infection I guess. They had clear fluid coming of their noses and made a weird noise all the time. The vet suggested they go on Terramycin (antibotic) for 10 days. Goes in their water and you can buy it at Mills Fleet Farm. They needed a second course after that at double the dose for 5 days. They are well and healthy now-thank goodness. But mine had bad breath because of the sinus congestion. The people who helped me work out what it was were from the University of MN-Animal Dept. So helpful and cost me nothing for their advise. The vets around where I lived had no clue and would not even see my hens, was frustrating. Hope you work out what the problem is and she gets better.
