We also use deer fence/netting for the covering for our chickens and turkeys. It is much easier to handle than chicken wire and we can get it in rolls that are 7 feet wide, which helps tons too. I do wrap the bottom couple feet of the fencing with chicken wire too though. If something is going to get to my roosting birds, they really need to put in effort. I may just put my ducks in with my turkeys until we can get it done. I know they'd be safe in there. The only reason why I haven't yet is the ducks have their own kiddy pools, and they make quite the mess. The turkeys aren't big fans of the ruckus lol

I may be mistaken, but if it's killing livestock and pets your able to kill it. I cannot believe that it killed an entire turkey and cat!! Crazy owl!
 
No need to eliminate the owl, just make it so he cannot get a meal from your chickens. Owls are protected, and he should not be able to get at your birds. ONce you fix your infrastructure, you can admire the owl as he kills rats and gophers. You have to protect your birds or if it is not an owl, it will be some other predator of which there is no shortage. And in the unlikely event you want to legally kill the owl, I would not hold my breath getting a permit..... it will not happen. He sounds like he might be a young bird.... the young ones are sometimes not very good hunters and they get desperate.

Yes, the only reason that I mentioned eliminating the owl was because he supposedly killed other fowl and a cat! I was just offering another perspective that wouldn't have other dead animals in the future! But because of these laws and regulations I agree with building a PVC and chicken wire roofing, which also protects from other predators, not just the owl ( which unfortunately will come along whether you want it to or not)

Thank you all for the advice! I'll see what I can do. I'd like to relocate the bird in all honesty, but we do live within acres of our timber. So if not this one, I'm sure there will be more. Has anyone heard of any success stories using the sonic predator deter? I've also considered motion sensor lighting, but I'd hate for it to just assist them in finding the birds (if the light just stirred up the ducks and didn't scare the owl or predator) So far until we can get the materials rounded up between work and the heat, I've put a decoy owl on the fence and put up wind chimes.

I had heard that they will just come back. I was hopeful that there were other options besides what I knew. Dang owls anyways lol. We're going to get them covered rain or shine.
