This AM we had quite a scare. I have one chick in the hospital cage right now. Bloated crop but she is doing better. I thought we were going to lose her too like we lost the last one. Anyways. The hospital cage I have is like a cat litter box with hood with a red light and thermostat in it. Well I was trying to heat it in a hurry so I could get to work on time. So I hooked up one of my red shop lights to the cupboard door above the hospital cage, figuring I'd shut that one off and just leave the built in one going while I was gone all day. While I was inside getting ready my dh went out then comes in saying he smelt wax burning or something. I run out to the garage and whew the smell I thought for sure he'd be ill or dead

The cupboard door had closed and the red light was on the cage the cloth covering the cage had a burn hole and the whole corner of the plastic hood of the cage gone all melted.
Thank the Lord the chick is ok and so are all the other chicks in the brooder next to him.
Lesson learned, I was always so careful with the lights, double hanging them and stuff. This happened in just a short time. I didn't even think of the cupboard door closing

Hard lesson learned. Always double secure lights.
Glad your chicks are okay.

Thanks, yeah hard lesson indeed we got lucky. I still am kicking my self in the butt I always make sure the light can't fall and ...duhh didn't think of the door holding it shutting

BTW the chick is doing good, flushed the crop and he is eating yogurt and bread with olive oil.

Thanks for posting this. I'm going to make sure I double secure my lights any more when they are in use. Thanks!
