I got home from a 6 hour round trip today and checked on the birds. I have 17 chickens and did my nightly head count. One is missing. Of course it can't be one of the common easy to find breeds for the area. No it has to be my naked neck hen. I searched high and low for my little hen and finally decided a lucky hawk got her. I looked over to the pool and noticed the ducks have made it nasty once again. So I dump it and water goes everywhere. Thats when I hear a bump and that weird mad hen sound. Where is this coming from? Its under the deep feeder (an old round cat litter pan). I lift it up and here is one MAD hen. Shes not only been trapped under this feeder for God knows how long but now the indignaty of being wet. Apparently some time during the day she either flipped it on herself of the turkeys flipped it on her. The feeder is only temporary until I can get a better set up. But all ended well and it was rather cool for the area all day so shes not hurt or dehydrated. Just embarrassed, mad and wet.

That is funny! So glad she wasn't hurt. Those silly girls can surely get themselves into a pickle, can't they?

She was really MAD! her feathers were all poofed and she was giving me the stink eye. Like it was my fault she got stuck under there. I think if she had neck feathers she would have had them all poofed out also. But she is back in with her buddies even IF she is ignoring me completely.

I am glad everything turned out to be ok! Funny!

I've had chickens do that......have lost one or two but most i have found in time. Funny thing is some of the chickens under the pan were full sized and if they stood up could have easily flipped it off...or at least i would have seen their legs under a walking plastic pan...

She is full sized and had she stood up she could have just lifted it off her. Its light plastic. I have now taken to feeding in several differant places so the pan isn't crowded. I have a drawing made for my feeding system I want my hubby to build me.

When I was a kid, I was traumatized by finding a dead baby duckling underneath a hollowed out watermelon rind. It was the heat of summer in Tennessee so he probably baked to death under there. So my whole life now I have been extremely cautious about pans that can get flipped over.

That same thing happened to one of my chicks last year. I had only been brooding two at that time, and when I got up one morning, one had found her way out, and the other I could not find. I looked everywhere possible. I could hear her peeping, but I could not figure out where it was coming from. After a while, I managed to get both my parents and my sister to help me find her. I kept them in our unfinished basement, so there were plenty of place up high for her to hide. I went and got a ladder to make sure she wasn't there, but could find her. I decided I'll look again in a little, but I need to make sure this one has food. So I tipped over the food bowl and guess who I found. Glad I found her in time! She is now my favorite hen (out of my 8 hens)
