had my roo "processed" today

When my chickens slow down on the egg producing, I plan to get more chicks and take my chickens down to the butcher. I have no problem eating what I raise. We buy sides of beef and a pig every year, and would love to raise them as well, but we'll start out small and work our way up to the real "feeders"

I'd rather eat them myself, appreciate them and make sure nothing is wasted, than have somebody else eat them and chuck half away.

Having said that they'd probably sit in my freezer for a couple of months until I forgot what they looked like!!!

I fully understand people who raise meat birds if thats what you want to do. I'm sure it's better for you than store meat etc. So no offense to any of you.

However, I ordered all hens with the intention of having them be pets and to lay eggs for us. Thats what I meant.........I don't want to eat MY birds. I am going to try to rehome whatever roosters I end up with, but if I can't I'm sure my husband will enjoy eating them.

Have bantams, eat extra roosters. I do not enjoy the dressing of them but it has to be done.

Side note, I wish NO ONE would eat store bought chicken as those chickens have a deplorable life as do veal. People need to understand where their food comes from. Not to cause a stir but store bought organic isn't any better, in fact that is a JOKE.

you say" strore bought chickens have a horrible life,", but what about{ free range }chickens bought from a store,,i only buy free range, and there is a huge diffrence in the meat,,is there a huge diffrence in there quality of life ?

I think they use the term "free range" lightly. When WE say free range, we mean out in the sun, lots of space, happy chickens running and bakocking around.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that the meat industry calls anything bigger than a teeny tiny little cage "free range".

If my husband tells me the chickens ran
away then suddenly makes me a homemade
chicken dinner I seriously think I might turn
vegetarian.
I love chicken but don't want to eat my buds:(

A buck was a good deal thou

SLYSTR,
I am also from dallas and would love to have the info on the place you took your roo. I have chicks-a-plenty with the intention of eating all the roos and several of the hens.
I have cleaned one of my hens before, but the defeathering I could really do w/out...especially on a scale of 10-20 birds.
You really can't beat $1 a piece.
BTW............HI NEIGHBOR!

wow, a dollar a piece. i wish there was someone around here to do that.

i think i will be ready to start broilers next year as an experiment. i can't butcher. i just can't. the smell of scalding them to pluck the feathers, blood dripping everywhere, the flies buzzing around the blood. ugh. i can just imagine i will be the talk of all the predators out there around my property with the smell.

but if someone else did and processed them, i could definitely eat them.

The suggestion that birds could be swapped with someone else for eating, whether it was in jest or not, it is actually a possible solution for those who wish to eat healthy home raised poultry but are having difficulty with killing and eating birds that they have become familiar with.
