First and foremost you need a clean shot with a .22lr to kill larger prey like a coyote, yes you can kill them with it but if you do not get the clean shot chances are you will maim it vs kill it...
With any firearm you have to worry about penetration and collateral damage... Rifles in 'suburban' areas are tricky as they have the potential to travel great distances and penetrate many things even house walls... If you do explore the rifle route you might want to consider a carbine chambered in a pistol round, there are several 9mm and 45 ACP rifles on the market now, you get the accuracy of a rifle but don't have the long range penetration risk of a rifle.... That isn't saying you don't have to be aware those bullets can still travel a great distance, over a mile in optimal conditions...
Personally since you already have a shotgun load it with buckshot and stick to close range shots, you have a much better chance of hitting the target and you have a much lower collateral penetration risk at distance...
