Sounds like to me your package should have been returned to you as "refused" not "unclaimed".

Well I sure hope you didn't refund her money! It certainly isn't your fault she couldn't accept them the first day or thought they wouldn't be any good. I would hatch them just to show her they were fine!

I haven't refunded the payment but I plan to tomorrow. I think it is the best way to deal with the situation.

2/25 customer told Post Mistress to 'throw away the box because the eggs were probably ruined'

Is there more than 1 person working at this post office?
Are you sure you talked to the same Post Mistress the customer did?
Our post office has 5 or 6 people working and answering the phone at any given time. I can call my PO 5 times in 5 minutes, talk to 5 different people and get 5 different responses, and they all seem to be unaware of anybody else working there, even if given a"specific name".

I think I would have first offered to send more eggs for the shipping cost before refunding the money.​

Not so much a good gesture, as putting a period at the end.
I don't appreciate being lied to.

If someone just blows off a box and then lies and tells me the eggs were cracked, that's not someone I want to deal with.
I don't *owe* this customer anything, if anything is *owed*, it is an apology for blatantly lying to me.
I'll glady return the MO to get this blight off my case.

I try to do everything within my power to make sure everyone I send eggs to, gets chicks.

I just don't tolerate liars.

I always send my eggs "signature required", it protects my paypal account and me from stuff like that. I also put the buyers phone number on the box.
