Hey all, Momageddon from just north of Seattle here. I'm getting ready to start my very first flock this coming spring, so I wanted to get hooked up with a community of chicken lovers to make sure I'll do right by my girls!

I'm developing my plan for a 1/4 acre, fenced suburban back yard... With 2 dogs who are bone heads. :/ I'm probably not going to be able to free range, but I'm looking at chicken tractor plans so they'll be able to get the most out of the yard. City limits allow up to six hens and no roosters, so egg laying ladies are the plan (plus, my two year old daughter is so sweet and kind-hearted to animals that I couldn't do meat chickens. I just couldn't).

Currently looking at Austrolorps and Rhodies, planning to start with pullets. Phew! Enough about me... Looking forward to meeting you!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I've raised both Australorps and RIRs over the years (still have Australorps) and they are both very hardy and excellent layers (Australorps are especially exceptional; an Australorp holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days). Australorps are also very calm and gentle (my children, and now my granddaughter, made lap pets of them), and will likely be beneath the RIRs (which are sometimes aggressive) in the pecking order, so I would suggest that you have plenty of room in your coop/run for your hens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting those eggs.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like a plan! Definitely keep the dogs at bay. The two seldom mix without a sad ending. You have picked some nice breeds to go with.

Make yourself at home here and if you have any questions along the way, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Thanks, y'all! I am leaning towards austrolorps because of my daughter, but RIRs because my friend who lives nearby has some, and her two kids play with them a lot (let's just say, I have never in my life seen a chicken dressed as Elsa from Frozen before meeting her, or a chicken go down a toddler slide in a Tonka truck, either...). I would probably have a single species for my first flock, just for simplicity's sake.

I'm really happy to have found this community; the sheer volume of chicken information out there is a little overwhelming at first! I will have many questions... But right now I am going to go read the pre-existing information on the site. :)
