So, two days ago on my drive home from work the radio forecast is ominous - quarter to golf ball sized hail heading my way. My chickens were free ranging and there was no way to bring them back to the coop - what finally did was how dark the sky was getting. Then the hail started - small at first, with the chickens seeming caught in limbo between thinking, "What the heck is pelting me," to chasing after the bouncing hail stones like they were some sort of a frozen insect treat. As the hail grew in size and intensity all of the chicks took refuge either under or in the coop. All except for my Red Star. She is always the first out of the coop in the morning and the last in at night. She paid for her tardiness this day. As the size of the hail increased - with the occasional pingpong ball sized stone - she's decided, "enough of this," and is high tailing it to the coop when apparently a hailstone with "her name on it" plunked her right in the head. She hit the ground like she been poleaxed. I'm watching all of this from the safety of my house, bummed about my hen, but not about to run the gauntlet to save a dead chicken. After the storm - and the entire ground was white with hail, I went out picked up her lifeless body and took into the basement, thinking to dispose of her later in the evening. Back upstairs I am going about my business, cooking supper, etc. Afterwards I go downstairs to do the deed. Once downstairs I look to where I had left her and she wasn't there! My first thought was my dogs! They love - or at least leave alone - my live chickens but maybe since this one was dead....Then I hear a rusting noise and go to investigate. My "dead" Red Star had resurrected herself and was inside a 1/2 full bag of chicken food, eating away!!! When I saw her just laying there with the hail stones bouncing on and around hervI didn't think the story was going to end the way it did!! She's seems to be fine and she is her headstrong self once again!

LOL Awesome story! So glad she's doing well. You'll have to give her a fitting name now, like "Resurrection Rita" or something! lol

Leggy Lazarus. That's cool, and obviously she has no brain damage as she quickly ascertained where the food was. Good on her!

Some girls will do anything to get in the bag of chicken feed won't they?
