So glad to hear the happy outcome! I, too had a chick that half zipped and then it was nearly 5 agonizing hours of he remaining such, struggling and distress cheeping. She was my first chick ever to hatch so I was trying to be patient rather than jump in to assist. When I finally did, I realized there was a piece of membrane attaching both sides of the shell that was dried out and "glued" onto her, that's why she couldn't keep rotating or kick it off!

She hatched in my hand as I assisted as well. She's now the strongest and most curious of the bunch (I think due to all that leg action trying to get out lol). I'm hoping mine's a hen too.

So cool to hear similar experiences. Yay for happy endings!

Yeah I had a chick die once…. I sat and watched it struggling for hours and I choose not to help it ; / that was tough because I walked away for two mins and it stopped breathing and died! I grabbed it out and opened it it was fully developed no veins and all yolk was gone…… clearly stuck it was so close but it couldn’t get out. I think hatching in the incubator is not ideal. Because we do it tho sometimes I think helping is acceptable in certain cases. I have not had to do what I did last night it was my first time she hatched in my hand it was such an actually amazing experience….. hopefully we don’t have to ever do that again but thankful I got support here and it helped me calm down! And it was a success ! These are all pre sold chicks but I think we will keep her ! Lol

Awww that's so tough. :(

Yes keep her!!

Yeah my take on it is that we're intervening in nature already by incubating, and when we do a bad job of mimicking nature (in my case, I opened the incubator a lot because humidity was really high) then they struggle needlessly due to *my* error. So if it's my mistake making it hard for them to get out of the shell, then I'm gonna try to fix it. So I see assistance more as remedying human's infringement on nature than interfering with nature.
