Hello new friends,
My spouse and I got our first ever flock of chickens as a quarantine project, and I am IN LOVE! They are so fun to watch. We got 4 chicks from our local feed store. A staff person did tell us the breeds (1 Black Austerlorp, 1 New Hampshire Red, 2 Ameraucanas,) but I'm not convinced...especially the Black Austerlorp...she looks more brindle than black. Anyway. Their names are Ruth Bader Hensberg, Attila the Hen, Ladybird Johnson, and Zippy. We moved them to their outdoor coop yesterday, and soon they will be little free-rangers.
Easily my favorite aspect of raising chickens so far is chicken TV! My son and I love to sit together and watch the chickies scratch, hop, chirp, and try to steal bits of lettuce from each other. We are looking forward to having fresh eggs, but honestly the entertainment value has already exceeded what I had hoped for originally. We also have some little neighbor children who are utterly fascinated with the chickens, and ask endless questions and try to pet them through the fence. In this time of social distancing, it has been really lovely to have something to talk about and a way to socialize without getting too close.
In terms of other hobbies, I am into anything artsy and unemployable. I play the harp, write Jewish liturgical songs, tell stories, sing, paint...all amateur, but with great enthusiasm. I have been a tutor/teacher for the past 11 years, but am starting a second act, going to nursing school this fall. Very nervous about that. My spouse and I have a beautiful 4-month-old son, who is the most amazing and exhausting human ever to exist, as far as we're concerned. We have 2 dogs, Grover Cleveland and Birdie, who have been very cautiously introduced to the chickens (so far so good!) Aaaaaand we live in the New Orleans area, so it's super hot and humid.
And finally, I have used BYC as a resource through the whole process so far, and I've found the community so warm and helpful. Every question I've had has been addressed by folks with a wide range of experiences. Hooray hooray!
Warmly,
Danielle
