HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Has anyone ever seen a chick with one 5 toe foot and one 4?
yep!

Thanks yes our coop is very secure but these boys were out in a run BC they're on the freezer camp list. Not a big loss this time but still frustrating. All of our other losses have been while free ranging. Being in southern WI we crested 100* this summer and we will probably achieve -30 or worse this winter. Not very hospitable conditions for any dog to live outside in. Plus we already have two dogs and several cats and can't really afford another dog. Although we have discussed it it's not something were prepared for right now. Besides if we can take out the predators (coyotes and fox at least) then we won't have such a problem.

Thank you all for the congratulations. Please keep rooting for little Miracle she seems to be oozing yolk from her navel. Seeming to confirm that she not only ruptured her yolk sac but also that she somehow managed to absorb some of it. I've had to clean her up again and she is definitely going to need some snazzy shoes to correct at least one of her feet which hasn't straightened out. To add insult to injury it got glued to her paper towel bed and she couldn't move.

Poor little girl. Still rooting for her and I'd love it if everyone could spare a few cheers. Her footwear is going to have to wait until later when DH2B gets home. In the mean time I just want her to rest. The little olive eggers chick is in with her now and it seems to have calmed her although I still feel worried that she could get hurt by the other one I think this is the better choice. Her navel has still not closed and I'm wondering how much more yolk will use from her tiny belly. I hope she heals up well and doesn't continue to ooze. Then again perhaps all the infected yolk will ooze out that would be good.

Thank you guys for cheering Miracle and I on it means the world.
Love them they are awesome looking! Looks like a great meat line!
i hope she makes it for you!
is she on any antibiotics yet?

uPsIDE DoWN ChICk UPDATE:

After laying on his side all day and looking like he would die any minute; he got up and started to walk around. I now have guarded hope. The sad part is I almost pulled the plug three times. I hate watching them suffer; but I left him alone. We will see how determined he is. He was determined to ask for help by pipping his own breather hole on the wrong end. He was determined to rest until he could muster the strength to stand. He is very small compared to the others.
great news!! he looks determined!!

that's her, I'm not 100% sure but with the brownish stripe down the back do you think silkie x Rhode island red sounds right?
and she is 100% Black, black skin, comb, beak. My novice guess would be the silkie x black Australorp. Im also not 100% sure because I was quick to judge but I believe that there are some barred rock crosses, and if my knowledge serves me right the spot on the head would indicate males? Right?
cute! no idea though sorry!

I'm getting blue, buff, and gold laced Wyandotte eggs.
Which will be going under a broody hen
AWESOME!!!! welcome!!!

Love, love, love, all of the rooster photos. I love roosters! Wish I could keep
them. I can until they get to crowing...too often.

Here is my Bubba. He was only 4 and a half months here! Big boy!

Not very colorful, but have this boy up for sale right now.

is he cuddly? would you ship him? lol he's a pretty silkie.

No power loss last night. Winds reached over 103 MPH. Got woken up at 4:25 this morning with a tornado alarm. The thunder and lighting have been going non stop since. We usually only get about 10 strikes in a whole year. CRAZY! Schools have been delayed. Might get canceled altogether.

My three earliest pipers all shrunk wrapped bad. I still have two of them in their shells. I really have no idea why humidity is staying so low. Ive filled the big tray twice, added sponges in extra containers and am still having to be hyper vigilant. The two who pipped later, piped and zipped fine and were out on their own last night. First my remaining serama egg then a blue EE.

The blue EE gave me a scare and I hope its in the clear. When I got up at 3AM to check hatch, she was out very active and trailing her shell by a long umbilical cord. When I picked her up to cut it off OF COURSE the cord got tangled in her foot! She seems to have tore her navel open slightly, about half a tick tic worth of insides came out, I tried to push things back in and got the blood stopped pretty quick. Put on anti biotic ointment, then failed to keep a bandaid on it. She's up and very active, but her navel still has a drying clod of stuff attatched.

All the horror stories with happy endings about chicks with intestines out are making me feel slightly better. I couldn't identify with certanty that there was intestine in what came out, but that is my fear. I feel super guilty.

Here is a picture I know you cant see much.

It's frustrating when you're trying to help them...and they manage to wreck everything and damage themselves.
AND it's always the ones you specifically want. I hear ya. Darn Murphy and his law!

So glad to hear that you had two survive and that they're both girls.

It would've been a kick in the shenanigans if both survivors had been roosters.

AND that'll be $14.95 for the rights to MY notes.

One can just feel how much you miss him when you talk about him.

I can't imagine how awful it is there right now.

The main thing is she's doing well. You replaced things and it sounds like it's holding it's own right now. You're meaning she's scabbing up over the umbilical hole?
If that's the case that's good. I'd keep a watch on her incase the plug/scab doesn't get knocked out/off until it's completely healed.
It sounds like you did a good job!

And it's good we don't see much in the picture...means there's nothing bad going on.

Well my impulse buy of chicks are here (stupid free shipping) they were delayed. I had never ordered chicks through the mail before and since the weather has been cold, I was expecting a bunch of dead chicks. But all 26 were alive and loud. Husband has yet to comment. I guess he is used to me by now.

Now the kids and I are going crazy trying to figure out breeds.

Murphy... Never can beat that sneaky booger...

Totally!! That I was very thankful for- although the one that died in the accident (they were sexlinked) was gonna be my new flock roo. But, all things considered, pullets are MUCH better.

$14.95?? Sorry.... I only have 14¢..... That's enuf, riiight? :p

where did you order from??

Meyer. They said free shipping if you ordered 25. And so I did. I did not want chicks this late in the year, but couldn't refuse "free".

We ordered 15 brown layers, 10 rare breeds, and a meal maker. It looks like they did include a variety of breeds. But I don't know what they are yet. When they get a little bigger, I will probably be asking in the "what breed is this" category. My kids are already making guesses.
