HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

5 chicks so far. I found the little yellow one that hatched yesterday outside the nest box. Apparently it couldn't get back in to momma! I picked it up to dispose of it, and it moved! Poor thing was mostly dead. Cold, stiff, couldn't peep. So I tucked it into my hand and held it till it warmed up to my hand temperature, and then stuck it back in when momma took the two oldest chicks to eat. I just checked again, and it is moving around just fine now. Yay! Still 6 more eggs to go.

nice save!!

That's my problem, not sure about others. My boys just seem to survive my hatching practices lol... the Maran pictured pip'd n zipped in an hour, while one pip'd a day early, stayed that way 24hrs, I later helped, she had pip'd too soon and intestines were out, others died in shell, or 24hrs after hatching... The Araucana also hatched relatively fast and was very vigorous in the incubator after hatching. I tend to pick boys from bins too, it appears lol...

I got more boys out of my last hatch too. Sometimes it equals out more, but not this time. Very rarely do we see more girls than boys. We usually have to cross out fingers for a girl out of the eggs that made it to lock down. I'm hoping for a couple of NN girls. In this case, hoping for NN's, because it can work both ways, reg. neck, or you will get some NN. Girls!!

Sounds like the boys are magnets for you, if you are also picking them from bins.

My last EE from this hatch was out when I woke up this morning!

unfortunately it had a small piece of shell under its eye lid. I flushed with saline, but the eye is still crusting over every couple hours and the corner of the eye turns up at the back. otherwise it's a very healthy chick.

This is very interesting. I have never heard of it happening before! But, I can imagine how easily it could! I sure hope this little one gets better as it gets older.

I am so excited, just candled my bator egg's and two look excellent. They are Trader Joe egg's so egg #1 is TJ of course and egg # 2 is Boo as they are due to hatch on Halloween. There are 12 in but 3 are iffy and the rest seem clear. Will candle again in a few day's to see.
