Yesterday I set 15 Bresse eggs. We drove 95 miles to Jackson to get them. I'm hoping this is the beginning of a successful line of meat birds for us.

95 miles for eggs!!!! WOW !!!! welcome over PJ!!! glad to have you with us again!

I will be setting some eggs for a customer in about 2 weeks. I don't believe that I have participated in a hatchalong since last Halloween. It has been a busy year.

I am undecided about our polish hens. But, I swear one of my dogs reminds me of the polish chicks.

lol cute

Okay, so.....

In my incubator I have 22 Lavender Ameraucana eggs and 2 eggs from my mixed flock. The 2 eggs from my flock are doing great! But, all but 1 Ameraucana eggs are clear!

he kept all the females lol and took the brahma

ha ha ha
the brahma cornish cross would make a good size meat bird

I got some Crele Polish (w/possible frizzle) eggs off eBay. Still got 2 or 3 going at 7 days, so I'm hoping they make it through. Then I'm only missing Tolbunt color... Picking up a "paint" Polish Tuesday (4days old)... My 2 three day olds seem like they need more buddies

BOO!

I'll be joining this hatch a long! I'll be setting eggs sometime in the next week or two, will be hatching from our own chickens this time who are Black Copper Maran Crosses.

This will be my second time incubating so far.

Excited to see what we'll be getting! I'll be starting to collect eggs tomorrow.

Yayyy!! Let us know if you have questions

I might be able to join in for this hatching. I have to check first to see if my boy is fertilizing the eggs yet or not.
fl.gif
I hope he is!!

Thank you and yes, I am excited if he is fertilizing them. He is a Splash Australorp and would be over my Black Australorp hens, resulting in all the hatch-lings being the Blues! I plan to put 10 of them in the incubator this evening, so if they are fertile and all goes well, they should hatch out Oct. 10th or 11th. Would that be ok for this hatch-a-long?

Update: Ok, so I put 12 in my incubator, instead of the 10.
Anytime in October, Woohoo!!

Good luck!

She had been sitting on her 5 eggs for the past week, I think she did ok. They are all alive. I'm sure she is more comfortable now though. I'm not sure how many eggs a serama can cover on average?? Maybe someone else can chime in. We are so excited!!!!!

i just know seramas are tiny, i am sure she couldnt cover 5 LF eggs but 5 serama eggs she would probably be fine, but that was nice of her friend to 'help' out

A couple tips on hatching bresse I wish I had been given before I tried to incubate them.

1) The eggs of pure or nearly pure birds don't have a protective bloom so be super careful with handling / candling, and perhaps look into one of the disinfectant egg sprays. (I will if I ever hatch bresse from my birds)
2) They do better with a lower initial humidity around 40-50% then up it to normal lock down levels after draw down. Evidently the eggs don't loose moisture the same way other chicken eggs do and its easy to drown them. ( I had other eggs that had been shipped in the incubator, so by pure luck I was doing a dry hatch. I marked all the air cells to track moisture loss and the bresse air cells didn't change at all until the last 3 days)

In my research I also heard that bresse are prone to egg shell quality problems and need higher levels of calcium and protein than other meat birds. I brought that up with the fellow I bought my eggs from and he told me otherwise, but all of my eggs were porous and/ or seemed VERY thin.

I hope your hatch goes well

It's day 14 for one of my broody hens. She was sitting on a dozen pullet eggs. After candling, she's down to 5. 5 were clear/infertile. 1 was a very early quitter, and 1 was a day 10-12 quitter.

I am in trouble. I just impulse bought 25 chicks at Meyer. They had free shipping

but now I have to tell my husband when he gets home and we agreed that it was getting too late in the year for new chicks.

But my son said it was a good idea to get more hens so we can hatch more eggs in the spring. So I can blame him, right?

Of course. Your son is right though. Getting chicks now is actually a good idea because they will be laying in the spring.
