I am in trouble. I just impulse bought 25 chicks at Meyer. They had free shipping

but now I have to tell my husband when he gets home and we agreed that it was getting too late in the year for new chicks.

But my son said it was a good idea to get more hens so we can hatch more eggs in the spring. So I can blame him, right?

I am getting a new incubator and want to hatch some ducks and maybe turkeys, if I can figure out how to calibrate the incubator to accommodate both at the same time. My husband's bitching today, about me making him fence off coops and all sorts of areas for the chickens and crap.... hahaha

I haven't even told my husband I'm getting more serama hatching eggs this week. I don't think he would have a problem with more chicks, but he really wants meat birds and not more of my 'useless' little guys

My husband doesn't really care about the chickens either way, but he loves seeing the rest of us enjoy them.

i just know seramas are tiny, i am sure she couldnt cover 5 LF eggs but  5 serama eggs she would probably be fine, but that was nice of her friend to 'help' out

I've never seen such broody hens! They have barely started laying and already want to sit. I need to get a picture of them.

I can't tell you how many times I've had to explain where all these new chicks came from! I got a cackle surprise box last month Didn't tell anyone till I walked through the door with them lol should have seen the looks I got. The kids always love it though! I've been looking at hatching eggs the past few days, it's so tempting!!! I've been good so far.

Well, I lost another silkie egg to a blood ring. 2 are completely infertile, and a third may have a blood ring, but I can't quite tell if it's a blood ring, or the veins, so i'm going to give it another day or two, just to make sure I don't throw away a viable egg.

Out of 8, we are down 4, maybe 5. I'm kinda bummed.

Walked outside just now to the coop and back and on the way back found one of our slw cockerals dead in the yard with no apparent cause. He was not stiff and had no injuries that I could see, other than being a little thin. Of course it had to be probably the nicest one of the four we are growing out. Ugh. Darn.

Came out carrying an egg from our legbar and saw that, boy did it rain on my parade.

Only two things I can think are I had just thrown them a bunch of large tomatoes did he choke on a bite, possibly get in a scuffle over one that I didn't see or hear and have his neck broken??? I'm thinking maybe he choked because he was happily eating with the rest of the flock when I walked away to go into the cooler coop.

Is this possible? What's the likelihood that he would just drop dead of no reason?

I'm sorry. I hate when one dies. Especially if I don't know why. I am always scared that it's something contagious and they all are going to follow. But here a necropsy is $160.

That's funny. I did something similar earlier this year. I bought 4 baby turkeys while he was at work. Then had to ask him to build them a coop.

He normally expects it. If we go to the feed store in the spring, he says he fully expects to bring some home. But this is pretty late in the season for us. They probably won't be fully feathered when it starts snowing. So they might have to stay in the garage until spring
