It's day 14 for one of my broody hens. She was sitting on a dozen pullet eggs. After candling, she's down to 5. 5 were clear/infertile. 1 was a very early quitter, and 1 was a day 10-12 quitter.

Always blame the childrenI am in trouble. I just impulse bought 25 chicks at Meyer. They had free shippingbut now I have to tell my husband when he gets home and we agreed that it was getting too late in the year for new chicks.![]()
But my son said it was a good idea to get more hens so we can hatch more eggs in the spring. So I can blame him, right?
and less fliesOf course. Your son is right though. Getting chicks now is actually a good idea because they will be laying in the spring.
Yes do!!I've never seen such broody hens! They have barely started laying and already want to sit. I need to get a picture of them.
Well, I lost another silkie egg to a blood ring. 2 are completely infertile, and a third may have a blood ring, but I can't quite tell if it's a blood ring, or the veins, so i'm going to give it another day or two, just to make sure I don't throw away a viable egg.
Out of 8, we are down 4, maybe 5. I'm kinda bummed.![]()
they'll be very people friendly by thenThat's funny. I did something similar earlier this year. I bought 4 baby turkeys while he was at work. Then had to ask him to build them a coop.
He normally expects it. If we go to the feed store in the spring, he says he fully expects to bring some home. But this is pretty late in the season for us. They probably won't be fully feathered when it starts snowing. So they might have to stay in the garage until spring![]()
You can ship to CA. At least Kathy says so.I'm sorry. I hate when one dies. Especially if I don't know why. I am always scared that it's something contagious and they all are going to follow. But here a necropsy is $160.
Walked outside just now to the coop and back and on the way back found one of our slw cockerals dead in the yard with no apparent cause. He was not stiff and had no injuries that I could see, other than being a little thin. Of course it had to be probably the nicest one of the four we are growing out. Ugh. Darn.
Came out carrying an egg from our legbar and saw that, boy did it rain on my parade.
Only two things I can think are I had just thrown them a bunch of large tomatoes did he choke on a bite, possibly get in a scuffle over one that I didn't see or hear and have his neck broken??? I'm thinking maybe he choked because he was happily eating with the rest of the flock when I walked away to go into the cooler coop.
Is this possible? What's the likelihood that he would just drop dead of no reason?

there's some show quality silkies on ebay. I think I may msg one and see if I can get 2 dozen shipped, for the bigger incubator to see if I can get a few to survive to hatch day. Now that we'll have our coops setup and the runs, and figuring out where we want to build a 3rd coop area, I'm excited. I want to get silkies setup for brooding next spring, because then I don't have to deal with the incubator.Always blame the children

Yes do!!
silkies are hard anyway, so shipped silkie will be even harder![]()

very tame lolMy other option, is my surviving silkie that is going to live in my daughters room, could be our incubator and if they are raised together by hand, by my daughter all offspring she broods, would be tame.
I just didn't think 1 silkie could handle more then a few eggs at a time. LOL
i try to look here, some of them sell on ebay tooI could. I didn't think about using the site on here.
