HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Good morning everybody!!!

Today is the first day since June? July? August for certain...that I haven't had any chicks in the house.
I've been stagger hatching and I've had a continuous flow of chicks and keets hatching so I've had continuous chicks starting in the laundry room.
I put the last 3 out in the brooder in the shop yesterday. It feels so...empty not hearing them.

My chickies!!!

I had a single chick a couple of times.
I threw one of my toques (stocking caps for you guys I think?) and the chick seemed to be happy to cuddle up with it.

I put in a mirror for my single chicks. Finally he had some company though. I kept his mirror in with him so he didn't feel lonely...

I remember a teddy bear with a mirror in its stomach.
I also have to wonder if a heartbeat bear (or any of the other animals available) or a ticking watch/clock under a towel would help. I know that it works for puppies and kittens.

This is part of the reason why the heating pad cave method is so great. The chicks get the comfort of snugging up under the pad, just like they would a hen.

I don't think that would work for chickens. It comforts puppies, kittens, babies, and other mammals because they were inside something with a heartbeat and heard it. But I bet the bear with a mirror would work.

Too many breeds and colors to know them all. I didn't even know they existed when I was raising Barred, White, and Partridge rocks.
And that is one thing I definitely don't know...all the different breeds. It's amazing all the different kinds. WOW!
I'm catching on to the more common breeds.
I think I've figured out I have a Cuckoo Maran rooster and not a Barred Rock.
I have mostly EEs and they're having chicks that look just like a Cuckoo Maran, BUT my rooster isn't the father.
I was like, hey...what??? Both sides were EE.
I think I need to post and ask those who know breeds more about all the interesting chicks I'm getting...lol.

That's a fantastic idea! I've done that with my budgies. They love it!
