2 hatched. 1 has a string attached to its belly. With a small blackish lump, black skin chicken. Got the first 1 out between pips because it was climbing all over the one that just hatched. Now 1 more is pecki g way out, cant pull injured baby out. What to do about the mysterious dragging stuff.

I had a chick who had this. I cut it off close the body once it was dry to prevent them from pulling on it. I was worried if I left the string, it would pull the intestines out.... the rough way chicks are, I didn't trust it being left alone. The baby is fine now!

Yay. Came home to a freshly hatched Hona baby. Its still half way wet and awkward on its feet. Its peeping though so thats good. I have another of the 10 eggs peep a hole. Hoping for several overnight, so i can open and take the babies out to thw brooder, so they aren't in incubator too long.

I never bothered to candle quail eggs when I had them. I also had a difficult time candling guinea eggs, some would look a head, others behind, then it made since when the hatch would last a few days.
I think guineas are evil and here just to make our lives difficult.

They probably have a secret society we know nothing about. They have evil plans.
And Duluthralphie's worried about waterfowl.

(Shhhh...he's in on their evil plans and he's trying to lure us away from finding out the truth. It's all a cover up!!)

So out of the 5 Cornish eggs, a dark and a white Laced Red hatched... the other 3 pip'd internally and that's it

The Coronation Sussex Pip'd internal and died, in guessing within the hour that I opened it, as it was still warm and wet

Blue Laced Brahma Didn't appear to pip, see nothing wrong with it, no idea why it passed... I have "Easter Eggers" hatching now...all showing straight combs and yellow down...so I'm confused on them, since I know white EE don't grow on trees lol, plus the straight comb...supposedly Ameraucana Roo to EE hens, maybe the hens are backyard mixes?

I wanted fuzzy cheek pink egg laying hens, dang it. I opened my dark Brahma (2), and they are alive, just not ready (they were on day 23, and after the dead eggs, I just kept going)...oh ya, another Sebright chick died before I got home today...

Ending on a good note, look at the cutie!(have the remaining 3 Sebright, and new hatchlings together now)

Sorry you are having such a rough hatch and about the Sebrights.

Another day has come and gone, and STILL I don't know how many chicks are under this hen! At the very least, there are 3, but I personally have only seen 2 (unless they look exactly alike and I am seeing different ones at different times). Duke has seen 3 at the same time, and heard more under her.

well the chick I was worried about just self culled by drowning in the water dish, it wedged its head between marbles.

....and here I was researching the most humane ways of culling chicks. didn't figure it would be taken out of my hands so quickly.

Morning everybody!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear of the quitters and the like for everyone who's had trying to hatch.

on all the babies hatched and hatching!!!! Very exciting!!!

I've had 3 chicken eggs that I can tell for certain that have quite and a few I suspect, but wasn't sure so I left 'em in.
The one egg for my royal purple guinea is the only one developing for certain and there's one I can't tell.
The rest of the guinea eggs were all clears. Which is "maybe" a good thing. Put a dent into their world domination plans.

The button quail?

One of the eggs is clear...lol. Todays day 13 so time will tell I guess.

I'm just dealing with a few issues in my previously hatched chicks.
The first presented with neurological issues and I was worried it was something contagious.
Of course this happened when I was combining and didn't have time to properly assess things.
But I thought I'd wait before jumping to conclusions. I started suspecting vitamin deficiencies.
Then I had a chick present with a drooping head. Both eating and drinking with full appetites.
AND then the one little chick started to show the beginning signs of a twisting beak.
I had a few chick deaths from coccidiosis just recently.
I had switched all my chicks onto medicated (Amprol) feed after going through a course of Amprol with everybody.

BUT I moved a clean set of chicks (on medicated feed) into the cleaned (but not disinfected etc.) brooder.
These are the chicks above that are starting to showing signs of vitamin deficiencies because the coccidia are causing enough damage that the chicks can't absorb nutrients/vitamins/minerals.
Vitamin B2, E and D3 specifically. I'm sure others as well.
I consulted the vet with my findings and they agreed.
So the feed with was not enough to stave off the coccidiosis.

And I'm realizing that my earlier chicks were showing slight signs of vitamin deficiencies but not enough to show clinical illness.
A good aha moment. The OEGB chick that had got chilled and I posted about? It's the one who's showing the beak issues.

So I came across some interesting info in my searching that explains some of the reasons of embryonic mortality at the various growth stages from deficiencies.

I also just came across an article last night that higher protein aids the growth of coccidiosis in comparison to a lower protein feed.
I'll have to research this further. It also has other interesting information.

Thanks for sharing these links... very interesting...saving. Once I try incubating my own birds eggs (since so much of what I'm going through can be attributed to just the shipping portion of my eggs currently, and secondly no idea how healthy the flocks are they are coming from) I can check these things out. My Easter Egger, Blanca laid a soft shell yesterday, kinda looked like 2 possibly, it was in the middle of the coop...so her deficiency could/would be calcium The obvious problem/fix are so much nicer than the obscure vitamin deficiencies...
