HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

@AlilSassy Here is a pic of the chicks feet (well, as best as I could get anyway...lo) that have hatched so far. No clenched feet or curling toes at all. These chicks didn't get turned for the duration of the incubation and it didn't affect them so I don't think it's a factor in Quailee's feet. Just thought I'd let you know that. ;) Have you read that wonky air cells can cause issues with a chick as far as deformations? I'm just curious.
Are you sure the not turning thing was to me? I don't remember saying anything about turning and funny feet... my chicks abnormal feet have mostly been hatching too soon or too late or me assisting from what I've seen... As for the aircell bit, I'm thinking that because where the chick was growing from beginning was where the aircell had started to shrink back and malform...so my theory would be that more than likely it damaged the cells there causing the missing eye/socket and also the beak to not align correctly due to the skull not sitting right... I was going to go the mile for that chick though...I don't think it had enough sense in it to give up though, even when it sat for who knows how long in its open egg at 73•... if only its belly had closed. Ah, well. He's perfectly formed with all the rest of the chicks and chickens on the other side :). That quail is TINY! Wow.

Interesting this got brought up on the bad leg..or feet. I just had a chick hatch with a bad hip problem and a flat foot..the chick was huge in the shell! Big egg, but still huge. I think it was pretty much stuck in that position, but got going anyway..somehow, and hatched. But man that leg and foot was messed up! I taped it pretty good..turning the leg inward, and keeping it in a cup during the whole night. Really helped. It didn't want to walk on it at first, didn't even clinch it's little toes at first, but started to after half a day. I think it will be fine. May walk with a bit of a limp, but not bad. I think them being really large in the shell makes a difference. I've seen it a few times now. Hard to fix.

My Wyandotte survived, Houdini was a large chick... it's sibling that died in shell was even bigger and egg bigger too, it couldn't absorb all the yolk, its belly was completely full when I eggtopsied and still yolk left... on a side note all 3 of my Wyandottes (2 bought from the store to replace the DIS) are (drum roll) BOYS! Over half of my Araucana are BOYS, 2/3 Lakenvelder, BOYS! I think 1 of my "Pullet" Andalusians is a boy too... grrrr! Oh sorry, that was a bit of a tirade there out of no where. Lol. Just frustrated. Glad yours are doing well. I need go move to the boondocks...well further out there so I can not worry about if I have boys :( ok, bedtime for this crabby patty...

Quote: Sorry, I should've quoted from before so you 'd known what I was referring to...lol. It was me who had wondered about not turning and the quail's clenched feet after you commented about the air cell. But this is the second time I haven't turned the eggs and I haven't had issues with the chicks' feet. I just wanted update about it. I'm thinking maybe the baby's issues stem from parents nutrition? On you tube the baby button quail have lovely flat feet.

We're still oogling the baby quail because we can't get over how small it is too.

I've seen him eat and drink and he's growing. I have a high box like Cynthia warned about and I put a small length of paper towel roll in for him. I've seen him bopping around like he's feeling good and he does like the paper towel roll to hide in and run through and he cuddles with the chunk of paper towel I put in so I "think" he's giving signs that he's doing ok.

how have your hatch rates been with the no-turn?
anymore quail in there??

No more quail hatched so I pulled the eggs.

We wish there had been another hatch so there would of least have been two.
The chicken eggs are still hatching so I'm not sure yet.

But these eggs aren't the best to go by, they were already old by the time I set them. For the exception of 2-3 days, I had the humidity 65% and higher (the first 7-10 days was about 77%) to keep the air cells where they were at. Most of the eggs' air cells already looked like they were at 10+ days when I set them....lol. I'm pretty stoked that I got any chicks at all. It's a brutal way to ensure only the strongest embryos hatch. I'm pretty much maxed out for coop room...

I plan on trying the no turn on one hatch of fresh eggs next year. That should give a more accurate hatch rate specifically for no turning.
