I have both blue/splash rocks and barred rocks laying right now, and the barred rocks are THE hands down laying champions. They rarely miss a day. The splashes are just now getting down to laying a few a week; the blue hen lays a couple a week. Which is exactly why Im crossing the barreds back to the blue and splash roos, to try and infuse those good layers into the foofy colors. I had rocks and orps for a short period, and personally liked the rocks blue better than the orps blue.
Notice to the people hording good blacks and barred rocks - I am over here, I need good blood. My partridge are going to look like what they are, production. And that's insufficient.
So come next year I AM OVER HERE and I need better round, better feather, better laying lines to work with. I am a shameless beggar and purchaser of chicks, eggs and started birds.
I've got some of Cyn's barred eggs for a good start at help but it's my first hatch and well, you know... I hear peeping but nobody is out yet. I'd even do BBS eggs unsorted because then I'd end up with some blue partridge eventually. I wouldn't end up minding that even a little bit. Lord, I'm easy.
Ok I went to Henderson's to try and help me make my decision, and it was no help. Showed 3 eggs each, good for cold weather, good temperament, Orps are more broody, but the others go broody sometimes too, and all make good mothers. So I choose............all three!!! Ha ha!
