I have a gorgeous Spangled Hamburgh Cockerel, yet two pretty pencilled hens. my hubby wants to breed pure pencilled. Therefore one cockerel or two pencilled must go. I love my spangled cockerel and would personally keepm him, exchange the pencilled hens for spangled hens.
Please let me know which is the rarer breed? so i can make an infomed decidion.

on this site:
http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html
they say:
varieties: Silver-Spangled, Golden-Spangled, Golden-Penciled, Silver-Penciled, White, Black

Less common.
56%/24% (slvr-spng/all other)

the way I read that is the silver spangled are the most common.

I have 3 silver spangled hens and have seen the spangled roos, they are pretty!

Silver Spangled is by far the most common color of Hamburg. If you want the rarer color, get a penciled rooster. But why do you have to choose between the colors? Just get the spangled hens for the rooster you have and get a penciled rooster for the hens you have.
