I'm planning on starting my first hatch next week

But I don't understand the turning. I will be hand turning, and I was thinking I would have the eggs in an egg carton the whole time, and tilt one end of the carton up 3-5 times a day.. but do they need to be horizontal to turn them? Should I just lay them on the bottom of the incubator with no carton?

lay them on the side put an x on one side with pencil. turn them a half turn 3 -4 times a day.

What I did is cut the lid off of a carton and cut the bottoms of the egg compartments out for airflow. Then I attached half plastic bottles on to the bottom. I used small yogurt drink bottles, halved lengthwise. The eggs are in small side up, marked with an X, just to be sure. A few times a day I moved the carton to the other side- rolling it really. It moves them about 45*.

Mind you this is my first hatch. Lockdown today!
