Good morning! This is a random question but I bought crumbles instead of pellets this go round accidently....so I'm wondering does anyone just throw handfuls of food out? If so, how many?

I know its weird but I have a feeder that I made out of a 5 gallon bucket. At the bottom, I have a eye bolt with a spacer that the chickens peck at and the food falls out. Unforunately with the crumble the hole is too big. So instead of buying a new feeder, I was just going to throw some food out there until this bag is gone. I have 10 hens

The crumbles get dug into the ground alot easier. I cut 4inch holes into a tub with a lid and there's alot less waste. My birds like the crumbles better too

i throw the crumbles into 3 piles so there isn't a lot of competition. afterwards there are chickens that like to eat the single crumbles that are in the dirt.

this flock only likes their crumble wet though so i have to put it in a pan.

how big are the piles? I mean I know if you say one handful that your hand and my hand are likely different sizes but I'm just trying to get a starting point. Ironically, I put them into 3 piles today too, with 2 handfuls on each pile

About the size of a tin can. I use a tin can to scoop their food. Reusable and if it rusts i can get another tin can easy. Like a soup tin can.

Guess it depends on your climate... if I threw out handfuls of pellet or crumbles, they'd just melt into the ground and then mold.

If I need an extra feed dish in a pinch, I grab a ceramic planter saucer (I have several unused ones lying around) and just toss the feed in there to keep it off the ground.
