Hands on hatching and help

I ended up with the ugliest Silkies ordering from a hatchery. I should have made Ken wait and then gotten some more hatching eggs from one of you instead. Oh, well. They're still cute in their own way, but nowhere near the quality I got from @RubyNala97 last year, even if I did end up with all roos. Glad you got your pen up! Don't worry - mine start out in the run in a pen and do fine! Had full integration by 5 weeks. (I was running a little behind with that because of Ken's surgery and my sister being so sick)

I totally get this, I have had 2 experiences in the last 6 weeks of Silkie/SG hunting. I hadn't found any here, so was looking elsewhere. My silkies are the cute little uglies :p . The second, an order of 16, day 7 & confirmation at 10 showed a majority of clears. It broke my heart to break them to see no bullseyes. They weren't cheap. The first was packed in an egg carton with each egg wrapped in some toilet paper. The second was very nicely packed, but ruptured air cells all around.

About half of them are completely detached and the others are just loose at the end. I don't want to be candling them everyday and let bacteria get in but at the same time I don't want the embryos to grow to the side of the egg. Today is Day 2, I was thinking maybe candling on Day 3 or 4.

Don't misunderstand my meaning-- I don't actually candle everyday. Normally, I candle and weigh on day 0,7,15,18. If everything looks good, I may skip one. On occasion, between those days, when it's dark out, I'll take the top off the bator and pass a strong flashlight over the top to get a feel on progress. With many breeds, I can see veining at 4 days. I don't pull at this time, of course.

My eggs are due to hatch tomorrow. It's my first ever time hatching eggs in a incubator. So wish me luck guys.

Goodluck! Assuming you are home, you will stare into your incubator for at least 20 min per hour , looking for a wiggle or listening for a cheep. Now, once there is an external pip, it will be difficult to pull you away!

The first one has pipped
Yay!
Pointed end malpo.

It's been like that for over 2 hours now and broke through anymore..?
Should i intervene
No! Never ever ever go into an egg after only a couple hours after pip. You can kill the chick. It takes anywhere from a few hours to 24 hours after the pip before you see progression in a egg pipped from the air cell. A malpo can take even longer because they are missing that period of rest and readying during the internal pip. After the external pip the egg to chick vascular system needs to shut down. This can take hours. To go in before this happens has the probability of rupturing veins and causing major bleed out. As long as there is no signs of distress, no excess fluids or bubbles coming from the pip, give it 24 hours. If the membrane starts turning dry, (leathery and tan/brown) apply a light coat of Vaseline or coconut oil to it. Make sure inner membrane isn't drying to the chick. If you start an assist only do as much as you can until you have veining in the membrane and stop.
