Hands on hatching and help

Here are the kids - one is kinda orange, two yellow with black, and one dark one. Excuse the hair styles - the blondes weren't quite dry yet.

Everything was going fine untl I hit a vein. Dabbed cornstarch on it and put him back in the incubator under a damp paper towel so he can rest. His foot is out, anyway.

Help! Day 20 of 2 Buffys sitting on 5 eggs. There were 8 but one was infertile and two were stolen by a crow. They're nesting together. This evening I peeked under to find that one of them on 2 eggs had squashed both!!!!! Argh. One was dead, well I am pretty sure it is though stuck in incubator just in case. I peeled off the shell and its veins and yolk were all absorbed, I wonder if it was hatching and she freaked out, as a first time mummy. The second one is less squashed though pretty bad, in a panic I made a peep hole at the blunt end and it's still moving about. I put it back under the other hen with her three eggs, all of which are not squashed and one of which has externally pipped. My question is should I bring the squashed egg in to hatch in the incubator or leave the hen to it?

The naughty hen has been exiled out of the broody coop.

I'm so sorry, Amy. There was definitely an issue going on with that one. It's always hard on the kids. I hope you have a great time on your trip!!

So far, having a pleasant vaca. My bff took us to her niece in law to have pics done today. Can't wait to see how they turn out.

I guess I did not report on my wrong-end pipper. I do believe this was a classic case of me jumping the gun.

After seeing the pip on the wrong end, I was afraid the membrane was too closed up, so I chipped a little small piece of shell off, just so it could breathe well. At over 24 hours, I broke off a little more shell and found the beak and head. Moistened the membrane well with Vaseline. He was chirping fine and strong. Had to leave for a few hours and came back and he had rotated, as if to zip, but he rotated down under the membrane, where I had broken off shell, and he drowned. I'm thinking if I had left the shell on, maybe he could have broken it normally. OR if I had pulled the membrane away, maybe he could have squirmed out. And had I been home, I would have been watching often enough to have caught it! But I feel like it was totally my fault!

At any rate, there was still a decent bit of unabsorbed yolk, which should have been well absorbed by that time (a good 30+ hours since external pip) so I suspect he wouldn't have made it long anyway.

(and I say "he" because when I pulled him out of the shell, I actually bathed his head and blew it dry to look for the white sex-link spot. Yep, was a boy)

Know how that feels. Mine had been pipped over 48 hours and never absorbed any of the yolk.

Okay, still not sure how best to proceed but his peeps are getting weaker so I'm going to try chipping off a little shell.

I probably would put it in the incubaor just in case the way it is cracked makes it harder for it to zip and hatch, but it might do fine under the hen too.

He's out! Yolk was already pretty much absorbed so no problem there. But his feet are totally curled so I need to break out the vet wrap again. He's resting at the moment and by golly he's earned it! Katie is beyond thrilled with all of them.

So far count is 2 black ones (another hatched just a bit ago) and 4 yellows. 2 others have pipped.

And Amy is right, the yellows with the black patches are paints... love the one with the butt smudge, lol...
