Hands on hatching and help

But if I am as much as 4 days behind, should'nt I still be turning them or does it not matter now?

I put 20 some eggs in my Styrofoam with a turner some years back. On day 18 I went to remove the turner----it was not plugged in----I am the only one that goes into the room where the incubator was so I done it----it was in a out building----anyway I still locked down----7 hatched---not a total loss with No turning!!

That's pretty good. Did you open the others or just toss them? I'd be curious as the effects that not turning had on the developers...or at least I think I would. Of course after opening a couple, I might have a change of heart. But I believe in absorbing knowledge when you can, so I would have had to try eggtopsies.

Delayed chicks do have a higher probability of development issues, weak chicks. Doesn't mean they necessarily will, but it's better to be prepared for it. I would highly suggest having some sav a chick electrolyte for their water the first couple days as they may need the extra boost, and it probably wouldn't hurt to have some nutri drench on hand. You may not even need it, but it doesn't hurt having it.
And vet wrap for making hobbles if any have splayed leg! I had temp issues and I had 5 hatch with leg problems! The hobbles helped 2 but 3 died :(

Absolutely. Always good to have that kind of stuff for any hatch, but especially one with low temps and humidity issues because unfortunately you do have higher occurances of leg problems in hatches bore from irregular/improper temps or humidity.

Eggs don't need to be turned after 2 weeks. So even if they were as much as 4 days behind at lockdown, they'd still be at the 2 week development for growth.

I just bought some nutri drench yesterday. I am going to take the turner out tomorrow. The humidity is at 35% today, what am I shooting for tomorrow? 50 - 60%? Assuming no further changes in the air sacs.

I run 70-75% for hatch. Many hands off hatchers run 60-65% I wouldn't be comfortable with anything less than 65% either way.

Ok, maybe I'm just the unluckiest person right now and maybe I just dont understand what is going on. I just candled my copper marans eggs and one of them which has been questionable since the beginning had not changed the size of its air sac since day 6. I figured well, I might as well crack it open and see so I did, and there was a little black chick, moving with its lovely veiny yolk and lots of bloody liquid.

I dont get it. Humidity has been in the 20s and 30s the entire time. Why wouldnt the air sac have changed all this time? I candled the rest of the marans an left the rest of them alone. They were showing good air sac reduction.

Black copper marans don't lost humidity as well as other breeds because the color is laid on their shells so thick. Some experienced hatchers of the breed recommend actually very gently sanding down the shell over the air cell to remove some of the color to make the egg lose moisture at the normal rate. If that one was especially dark or had an especially thick shell it's likely that that's what caused this. If it makes you feel better if it really had that much moisture and hadn't changed since the 6th day it wasn't likely to hatch anyway.

Sorry that happened :hugs

Wow, well I guess one (hopefully) learns something important every day. Yes the egg was particularly dark, the rest of them are dark also but at least making progress on the air sac expansion. I may get 7 out of 14 if I am very, very lucky. Thanks for the response.
