Hands on hatching and help

Some folks use wax - just kinda paint it on the crack but try not to extend too far off the crack into the good shell so that it will continue to lose moisture at about the same rate as the others.

So dissapointed!!! This hatch is so dismal! I know it's the first hatch coming out of cold weather, but I expected better. I don't usually loose more than a couple after lockdown. I lost 4 after lockdown and two of the internal pippers just up and quite over the night. That means at this point the best I can do is 9 if no more are lost. That's only 60%. It's been a long time since I had that low of a rate. 5 due next Friday if they make it and I'll be adding a new batch this week. I hope the silkie rates come up. I'd hate to think that I lost my touch.

I had two more hatched this morning at 4. They woke me up with their loud chirping...lol They are yellow, I believe one is a paint. I think I can see a couple black hairs in there. I guess I'll be able to tell once they fluff up. Everyone is still in the incubator. Waiting on the first one to get a little more active. It's taking her more time to get on her feet. The other seven have beaks out so I will be monitoring them closely. It looked as though one more was thinking about starting to zip.

4 out. 2 in the process of zipping. that leaves three.

I eggtopsied the other 6. 4 were paints, one blue and one black. One was definitely the egg didn't loose enough moisture. A second was a little wetter than usual. The other four looked fine, good air cells, good position, no deformities. There are no signifiers as to why the two that had internally pipped quit.

One of the five for next week quit as well. So, going to regroup, change out the rubber mat. For some reason this rubber mat, after putting water in, coloring came off on 3 or 4 eggs. I've been using the rubber shelf liner from the very beginning and have never had color leak from it onto the eggs, even when it's gotten water on it. Don't know what is going on there or if that has had any effect on the 6 from that group that had coloring come off.

Oh wow. I'm sorry.

Would cardboard work? I got some cardboard liners from Brinsea (more to make a template from) that have ridges. I got 6 for $6., I know expensive for cardboard but I thought it would make it easier to make more!

How many babies so far? Is today the day for the zippers?

Thanks. I'm going to grab some liner from Family dollar or Dollar general. It could just be a change of brand for the dollar store. Or just the color itself not applied as well... I have 4 in the brooder and two just zipped out. 3 left to go that are pipped.

This is the second external pip. Is it starting to zip? It's rocking and rolling..very active and chirping. The first is still alive but has taken a break. The other three are just sitting there. I'm afraid to candle with the two eggs that are so active! I want to know!!! :)

Thanks for sticking with me!! :)

It's not actively zipping yet, but it is progressing, that's always good. I rarely have an egg pip and zip before 12 hours, usually it's closer to 18-24. But I have noticed that my early pippers take longer to progress than the pippers that are Day 20/21.
