Hands on hatching and help

it might take several weeks to dry up enough. did you put Vaseline or vetericyn on it several times a day or green goo animal first aid salve in umbilical/intestine vent area.

I had a chick hatch like this:

Didn't think to take photos when it was bigger..and meaner looking.

Same chick the next day.

And two weeks later, living out in the outside brooder and thriving. He still has one little spot there that looks sorta like when an infant's navel dries up, but it's small, the other chicks don't bother it and he doesn't seem to mind it either. The only thing I did for it was put a little Betadine on it the first day. After that I just left it alone to dry up if it was going to, or prepare to cull him if it got infected.

The more stuff that is put on it, the longer it will take to dry up and fall off. It should dry up in a matter of days if it is left alone after the initial antibiotic ointment is applied.

I applied neosporin to mine the first day and left it alone and it dried up and fell off a few days later.

Yep, I remember that you helped me with this one. Had no Neospirin - just a lot of Steroid antibiotics and one with pain reliever in it, plus Betadine left over from Scout's frost bitten feet, so I used that. Seemed to work.

Who?
If me, no.
I put betadine on about 12 hours after hatch after what was going to absorb was absorbed. Nothing after that. I'm trying to get it dried out..
I do use antibiotic cream on membranes of assisted chicks to keep them from drying out..
But as for the yolk blob, I'm just keeping him in hatcher until it falls off or is dry enough that I know the chicks in the brooder won't kill it if they peck at it..otherwise, I have some moist crumbles in his corner of the hatcher, I take him out to eat some egg and drink and then he goes back in the hatcher.
ETA: Chick's vent is fine, umbilical area is also fine other than the yolk blob still attached, but there is no infection, swelling, redness, etc so no need for anything antibacterial. ..if it does start to look like it's getting infected, I'll probably go with oral antibiotics over topical, just because I don't think introducing anything moist to that area is a good idea right now

This little guys is about that size, but has a teeny section about 1/8 of an inch long that it's hanging from (I don't know if that even makes sense out loud..lol) I'll get a pic..I honestly think it would be safe to snip off now, but I'd rather be safe than sorry..it's still 'soft' on the insides although the outside is hardening up.

The white stuff is poo, so insides seem to be working properly, which was my main concern about letting him eat..
I still think he's thin in the back end, but he really is full of himself. .he knows when it's time to eat, comes running over and hops in my hand every time..he however is not at all happy when I hold him the way I did to get pics. .he squirms and fights me the entire time.
To me, the size of the blob has not changed at all , but is getting drier (very slowly)..
I thought about putting a bandaid over it to keeps other chicks from.getting to it and then putting him in the brooder..figured bandaid would draw just as much unwanted attention..im.debating now on laying a dark towel over the whole brooder to keep it dark so maybe they wouldn't see it as easily but I know he wants friends that are actually up and playing, not freshly hatched chicks that are still wet , laying around.
I'm just not sure about it yet.
It's on the chilly side here today, so chicks that hatched over the last 24 hours won't get moved to the outside brooder until tomorrow probably and then I'll just keep a silkie baby or something small and quiet in the little brooder with him until he's 100%..
I am 100% more hopeful today, than i was yesterday, that he is going to be just fine eventually. .it may take a couple weeks, but that's okay with me as long as he pulls through
