Hands on hatching and help

I not the biggest fan of candling. It doesn't help us. We lose more when we do that. We get more just to leave them alone. And not to touch them so much. Not to mess with ducks broody momma or incubators.

Missed u guys..lol...bad storms make for crappy Internet ..

Another group of eggs in the hatcher..day 19 so should be any minute now on the banty eggs..
On the broody front, my sweet little Serama has decided she wants to be a mama... since the ping-pong balls she had gathered weren't gonna help on that front, I grabbed a couple of her eggs that I set a few days ago n gave them to her..
Brooder is full..older babies moved from the grow out room to the outside coop (still have the MHP so I feel okay about it...) one decided she would rather free range last night during the move and spent her night under the barn.she decided today she'd move back to the coop..but she's one of the youngest and if she can handle a night alone without heat, I'm sure everyone is capable..it's just the mama hen in me isn't ready yet..
So now have an empty grow out room that need filled..lol.. I'm slacking.. but the Serama is nesting right outside the door to it, and her husband is now taking up residence in there so it can stay empty (and quiet) for her for now ♡♡

Set 16 khaki Campbell eggs today from a fellow BYC'er.. swapped her some Norwegian eggs for them...shipped ALL THE WAY FROM TX TO WV... AND NOT ONE..NOPE, NOT ONE DETACHED OR ROLLING AIR CELL... they look like I just walked outside and collected them♡♡♡♡

So..

No fan, justfoam cooler light bulb, foil, wet sponges vent holes & window.
5pm here they look the same on outside, I'll candle at dark.
I'm so anxious, maybe a glass of wine is in my future lol.
LOL
101-102F taken near the top of the egg is proper temps for still air.

Again you are wrong. Unless you are handling eggs roughly or with nasty dirty hands, candling does not hurt them, especially if they are your own or local eggs. As a matter of fact, to combat people that spit these untruths from their mouths, I experimented with candling vs non candling in which case my test eggs were candled EVERY SINGLE DAY. 100% hatch rate. Shipped eggs are more fragile because of the trauma of shipping so they do fair better with less handling, especially if they have air cell damage. I am an avid candler and it does help to learn the development stages and what to look for and know how well you are on track, especially with air cell size. A lot can be learned and monitored through candling. I respect those that don't feel the need to candle, but I hate info being passed and handed down to make others fearfull of experiencing the wonder that it can bring.

Just don't drop the eggs!

Cute!! We've had a crappy dreary day today. Rain rain rain.

Amy, I've been following your lead re: candling and doing it daily the last few days during this rollicking never ending hatch. It helped me realize I had a shrink wrap victim when their air cell doubled in size overnight and took over 60% of the egg. That chick is alive at the moment and has some room to move due to a safety hole and some moisture. I know it would have been DIS by now if I hadn't candled.
I was hands off the first couple of weeks but candling towards the end gives you a really good idea of what's going on.

X2. I would be the one to die if I didn't candle ;)

We made it from about noon until now without rain...knock on wood we make it thru the night.. ground is WAY past saturation point and even a drizzle is leading to flooding :\
I'm over it for sure..rain like 19 out of the past 21 days..

I not the one for X-rays sonograms or any pregnancy motors so why would it be different with my eggs. For us it hurts it. We don't get good hatch rates. Those
Machines hurt pregnancy also. We prefer a midwife. I am the midwife for my animals.

At hatch time the draw down itself can be extreme!! Candling and being a part of the hatch can be very knowledgeable and it helps to know what you are talking about when you are trying to help others and without actually experiencing something, you can't really advise.

Me too!!! lol The hatch I am on now is the first hatch that I have not candled every night and that's only because they are green and it's more of a headache to try to see anything than a pleasant experience...lol I have candled a handful of times and my cells are marked for days 7 and 14, but I have neer been this hands off.....lol
