Hands on hatching and help

Well, I just set 25 sultan eggs (not 26 because I managed to break one

) and I also had to throw in two mystery eggs because they may have been cemanis, I couldn't remember if I set some cemani eggs in that carton or not (you'll notice I said "had to" - clearly there was no other choice to be made).

Sultans! Great!

Of course you had to! To eat them would have been sacrilege.

How else are you going to know for sure what kind they were??

Thanks all :) the flock will recover! We've set 15 of our own eggs today - a mix of cream legbar crosses, Marans, Araucanas and Buff Orps. I didn't think my husband would be onboard but he's said yep let's set a whole bunch! So I hope we will have better success. It'll help that the eggs are mostly pale and so easier to candle than the Marans.

Foxy fox has so far got into the less secure bit of the pen but it's still pretty fenced/wired/raised houses etc. Some areas have electric fencing and so far they've stayed secure but I worry the fox is getting bold. We have a fox trap out now, so far we've just caught one of the poor cats!

I hope you can catch your fox. They definitely do get bold when they have babies to feed. My neighbor lost 14 chickens in one day last year to fox. :-(

I hope you have a great hatch this time!! I bet you'll get much better results between your own eggs and lower humidity. I set eggs yesterday so we should have babies about the same time!

Geez the bug has seriously bitten me. I just ordered 2 ancona duck eggs. I just got on there to look thinking it might be nice to eventually have a few more ducks and then boom they were getting ready to be shipped... :/ hmm what is this self control you speak of.. hubby is going to kick my butt lol

I came home to surprises - my keets aren't all pearl  They should technically have been since their father was - unless their father is split to something. And he must be because I have a lavender, I think, and something else. Haven't really been in the incubator yet to check all the colors but that is a surprise for sure.

I was only planning on keeping two of these - so far there's four that I want :th

Edit:

Surprise number two of the evening - went to lock down my eggs due Saturday and one was hatched! Really cool looking chick, I believe half CCL half AC and if so it's a pullet. I think my broody will be getting that baby as well. Someone stop me from keeping all these birds!
so glad you got the guineas you wanted!!

Thanks! These were a total surprise, I really though I'd get only pearls out of them. Now, if I can just get some pieds out of the eggs I bought :fl

The addiction has set in! What is your plan on what to do with the duck eggs when your chicken eggs go into lockdown? Will you just put them into one of the two incubators you stopped using? I hope they both hatch for you - if not and you only get one, you'll have to try to hunt down another duckling to keep it company.

Yes I thought about that. I'm going to start it in the manual incubator that worked the best until the others hatch. That should only be about a week since they won't be shipping it until the 10th. Then I'll move them to the good incubator. I'm thinking about getting a fee goose eggs too but I can't find the breed I want. I thought maybe I could hatch those with the duck eggs that way if only one hatches their is still maybe a goose too. Of not I'll go to a hatchery and order some ducklings. I have 3 older ones already. 2 Swedish and one roen. :) I have a week so I will for sure work it out by then.
