hanging CD's on a line

The hawks are circling. I lost a chicken last year to one and don't want to lose any of my new babies! I've read on two other threads to hang cd's on a fishing line to keep them out but does anyone know from experience that this actually works before I bother doing it. My run is about a half acre so I need a cheep idea for protection. Thanks in advance. Dee

I have heard to hang up those aluminium (spelling) pie tins or pans.. Im thinking the main idea is something to reflect the sun...

i have not heard about it working for hawks. i use cds hung on trees to keep the deer from barking them though. it worked for a while but its so windy here (i'm in the windiest spot in Ohio) that they eventually tore off. this winter, i'm putting my windchimes out back. had 3 trees ruined by deer. i love the deer but can't afford to replace trees constantly.

I have tried everything for the crows here, Christmas tinsel which I got up really high in a 50 year old pear tree.
I attached the bit of tinsel to string which I tied to a short heavy stick and threw with all my might up high. Then I pull the stick down and the tinsel stays up there. It worked for a day or 2.
I have used cds on every tree here, same story, they get so used to them, but they send pretty rainbows around the garden when the sun hits them. Try it anyway.
I must say that last time I saw a hawk here I threw a silver plate serving dish at him and it is still up there in the top of the tree. He must think im nuts and I havent seen him since.
Have you any old silverware lying around which you can throw at him!!!

As for the CDs....we recently went through every computer CD in the office. I had a stack that followed my rule of "if it has not been used in a year, do you need it?" I told DH I was going to hang them on the blueberry bushes and he suddenly decided he might need them some day for something.

Hi, still wondering if anyone has actually tried this with success before I start stringing. The pie pans sound better.

I didn't use CD's, I used the lids off of cans. I have one of those openers that leaves no sharp edges. Collected lids from cans (and the lids from those frosting cups in whompum cinnamon rolls) all last winter. Then tied them around my sunflowers and garden beds after dh punched nail holes in them. They work because they reflect the sun, plus make bangly noises when they bump each other.

I've seen hawks up high, but not close to our yard. DH thinks it's the rubber owl he put on the swing set that keeps them away, though. But I know my lids kept little birds off my garden and sunflowers, and kept the squirrels away, too. No easy food had to have kept the hawk from being interested as well.

Since the little birds pooped all over DH's owl, I don't think the hawk would take it seriously, either...

Yeah, I don't put to much faith in those owls. They're all over on docks in Maine to deter seagulls. To bad the seagulls sit right next to them. Thanks for the input.
