Hello everyone, metro MN here. We did it backward, getting the coop first. Oops! We did get the city to amend the rules however, when we pointed out that they were not 100% clear so now at least nobody will make the same mistake as we did!

We tried 3 times to obtain a permit and were denied - long story but we persisted and finally...they agreed and the coop will be in an outside garage. Now we're waiting on chicks, arriving in May. We still need to construct a run which is the reason for the delay, so our permit is somewhat provisionary, as long as the run we build is sufficient, and we need to wait for the ground to thaw. In the meantime we're learning all that we can. I look forward to chatting and learning as we go - nice to meet you all!

IS it possible to find some used dog kennel panels on Craig's list or elsewhere? If you line them on inside with 1/2" hardware cloth they can be pretty well predator proof. You can also cover them to provide some relief from rain and snow- keep out raptors & prevent chickens from flying out. A wire skirt extending outward from perimeter to 18" to 24" and covered with grass or sod, or gravel can keep out some of the digging predators. Rule of thumb is 4-5sq.feet per bird inside the coop - not counting roost and nest box, and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor run.

Hope you get your permit. Please update us when it happens. Best of luck and Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock.
