One of my welsummers (actually, er... I think it's a welsummer that is brooding them, see the pictures and let me know what breed you think the hen is... she is either a welsummer or an EE) has been brooding a clutch of eggs layed by my EE's, welsummers, blue cochins, buffs and RR's, fertilized by a buff rooster...
Had a total of four chickies hatch today! I'm so curious as to what they will look like. One of the chicks is clear yellow and I'm thinking probably pure buff... maybe... and the others are yellow with some small darker marks in their downy fluffiness. Picture time! ( I only have them with their momma as the rest of the eggs continue to hatch... once they have they will be raised with a heat lamp )
Momma and a chicky (see the mom has a fluffy face? Is she an EE or a welsummer?)
Chicky getting her first drink (I need to find my lost chick feeders :/ )
Momma (well.. broody xD)
Don't read if you are squeamish or sad things bother you.
Unfortunately I didn't realize they were hatching this morning and some of the other hens yanked one of the first to hatch from the nest box and brutalized her.
( at first I looked and she just had a patch of skin ripped off her back... I thought she MIGHT be able to bounce back but then I spotted the wound under her wing, I could actually see bare muscle and fat stores near her crop.
( I decided to end it for her... my dad told me to drown her but I thought that would be kind-of cruel... so I used scissors
Its the first time I ever had to do something like that, I feel bad that I didn't get out there sooner and rescue her. As you can see by the pics I separated the broody and the chicks from the rest of the flock until all the eggs are hatch... Thankfully the broody really didn't mind and settled right back on the eggs like nothing had happened.
