"Hey bud, it's all right, you'll feel better" she said, leading him into the wash stall.

He kept his ears pinned but stood still for her

"Good boy" she said, cross-tying him in the stall.

Danny unscrewed the cap off the water bottle she had and took a swig walking over to the pasture.

Michel crossed his fingers so tight they turned white. "Please..." He whispered to himself. 

"Our results are in." The announcer called. In 3rd place, we have Sarah with her horse, Acapella!"
Sarah mounted Acapella and trotted him to the center, the audience clapping.
"In 2nd place, we have Siserah, on her horse Happenstance!"
Siserah mounted Happenstance and trotted him besides Acapella.
There was a dramatic silence as the tension grew.

"Gaaah..." Michel muttered, fighting the urge to clutch his head. Please say Skyler!!! He thought.

"And in first, taking home the national champion title..."
Skyler looked at Starfire, and whispered: "Even if we didn't win, thank you..."
"We have Skyler and Starfire, for the second year in a row!!!"
Skyler's eyes went wide and she grinned broadly, hopping on Starfire. She cantered a circle around the arena and then took her place beside Happenstance. They all slipped off their horses, and Skyler threw her arms around Starfire's neck. Tears rolled from her face, and she held onto Starfire. But she wasn't sad. She was happy. Right now, there was no greater bond between horse and human than Skyler and Starfire.
"Thank you..." She whispered. "Thank you..."
