Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My wife and I have had chickens for 18 months, we started with 4 in Miami we bought from a feed store, 2 RIR, 1 gold laced wyandotte and 1 we were not sure the breed. The mystery chicken ended up being a rooster so we needed to get rid of him (our whole operation was illegal and the crowing was going to blow our cover). After getting rid of the rooster, we got 2 more; another RIR and a true Dominique. Soon afterward, we had an attack and only our RIR survived. Her name is Layla and is my 2yr old son's best friend. We recently moved out of Miami to Loxahatchee, FL on 1.3 acres and have a whole bunch more birds.
How many chickens do you have right now?
We currently have 14 red rangers who are 2 weeks away from processing, 2 mature laying hens, and 16 juvenile egg layers (1 is probably a rooster)
What breeds do you have?
Red Rangers, RIR, Americauna, Speckled Sussex, Leghorn, Cuckoo Marans, Buff Orpington, EE, Brahma, Welsummer, Gold Laced Wyandotte (I might be missing a few)
What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We love the fresh eggs and meat. I also enjoy learning about the chickens and all the ups and downs that come with raising animals
What are some of your other hobbies?
Between, work, kids and chickens there really isn't too much time for anything else. I do enjoy hunting, fishing and being outside.
Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Married with 2 kids (2.5 and .5) we have 2 dogs(both rescues, 1 American bulldog and 1 black mouth cur). I currently am an instructor at a small university and my wife has her own interior design business (she doesn't allow me to just throw coops together without looking good).
Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I am a long-time stalker and reader. I am looking to start breeding some chicks so thought it might be time to get my toes wet.
